NBA Slam Dunk Contest 2012: Paul George Will Dominate in Lopsided Affair

Scott SemmlerJun 5, 2018

The 2012 NBA Slam Dunk Contest is considered a dud this year, with no superstars present, but there are plenty of high-flyers that should impress tonight when all is said and done.

Paul George should jump out to people, although he has seemingly taken a back seat in terms of being picked to win this contest.  The odds favorite is Derrick Williams.  The strong and powerful dunker is the favorite based on what we saw from him last year at Arizona in the NCAA Tournament and the fact he was the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft last year.

But all those who immediately picked Williams to win obviously have not paid attention to what Jeremy Evans, Chase Budinger and George can do.  Most notably George, who will win this event hands down without seeing anyone in his rear-view mirror.

George is athletic, lanky and has tremendous jumping ability, which is why he will be far and away the best dunker on the court on Saturday night.

I would advise to check out some of his highlight videos, as he has big-play ability that will carry over into tonight's dunk contest.

We can talk about Williams, and I assume his powerful dunks will get him to move on up the leaderboard, as well as attract the attention of the arena, but it seems Williams' range of dunks will only take him so far in this contest.  His 6'8" frame is not what bothers most, it is his 241-pound body that has some doubting whether or not he has the capability to put on a good show tonight and get inventive.

George's 6'8", 215 pound body is the quintessential frame for a highlight-reel dunker, and we should be witnesses to that tonight.  It is those assets that will make him the favorite from his first attempt to win this dunk contest.

We should be able to watch Evans put up some nice attempts as well, as he is severely underrated in this event.  Like George, his sleek frame should make for high-flying action when his name is called.

However, from what we have seen this season, George will have some inventive attempts tonight and become the majority favorite to run away with this contest.
