NFL Combine 2012: Breaking Down the Prospects Making Waves in Indianapolis
Making a good impression and causing a buzz around your name at the NFL combine can literally be the difference between being drafted in the first or third round in the NFL draft.
There are already more than a few players that are impressing at the 2012 combine, whether it be because of their workouts, interviews or just their general persona's being larger than life.
I'm down at the combine and keeping my ear to the ground to bring you the latest buzz.
Here's a breakdown of some of the biggest names and the storylines surrounding them here in Indianapolis:
Matt Kalil Is Very Fast
1 of 8Matt Kalil has looked very good at the combine, and at 6'6'' and 306 pounds, he is certainly hard to miss.
He looked extremely chiseled in interviews with the press and impressed with 30 reps at 225 pounds in the bench press.
He may have made his greatest impact in the 40-yard dash, though, where he ran a 4.99.
That's incredibly fast for such a big guy, and his status as the best lineman in the draft has been firmly solidified.
Alshon Jeffery Silences Critics
2 of 8South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffery was the center of a ton of rumors leading up to the combine, with some thinking his stock would fall because of him being "out of shape."
He showed up to the combine at a very impressive 216 pounds and silenced all of his critics.
He won't be running the 40, but his point was made at the weigh-in. Expect Jeffery to be the first or second receiver off the board.
David Molk Falls Short of Goal, Still Impresses
3 of 8Michigan center David Molk came into the combine with the goal of breaking the combine record for reps.
He didn't reach his goal, but he still really impressed people here in Indianapolis by putting up 41 reps at 225, which is the highest number of reps so far.
David DeCastro's Great Form
4 of 8David DeCastro is easily the best guard in the draft, and I personally think he's one of the best overall players in the draft.
He's looked great so far in the drills and has shown off his great form, footwork and athleticism.
He ran a slow 40 time, but he more than made up for that with his performances in the drills.
Melvin Ingram Slims Down
5 of 8Melvin Ingram looks really good at the combine, having slimmed 12 pounds off a frame that frankly didn't need it.
It was a luxury for him to lose the extra pounds, and now he's coming in looking extremely dangerous.
He was already one of the most athletic players in the draft. Imagining him coming off the edge and blowing by left tackles makes him a very interesting prospect, and his stock may rise.
Trent Richardson's Bold Words
6 of 8Trent Richardson is hands down the premier running back in the 2012 NFL draft, but he won't be working out here at the combine.
He had minor surgery on his left knee that is holding him out from fully participating.
Even though he wont get the chance to prove himself in drills, he came out and made some bold proclamations, according to the Associated Press via The Washington Post.
"I’ve never been caught from behind,” he said. “People who want to question my speed, look at the tape.”
He also said that he wouldn't stand down in the hole if he had to meet stud linebacker Ray Lewis. It's interesting that he's coming off so strong, knowing that he's unable to back it up right now.
Cordy Glenn: The Speedster
7 of 8Georgia guard/tackle Cordy Glenn is 6'5'', 348 pounds, and he looks every bit of that.
He's a big man, but somehow he was able to run an incredible 4.96 40-yard dash—which is unofficial, mind you.
Either way, he looked incredible and fast, especially considering his size.
Everybody is talking about him right now.
Everybody Loves RGIII
8 of 8You can't go anywhere in Indianapolis right now and not hear how impressive Robert Griffin III was during his interview.
He's about as popular as Peyton Manning is down here right now, and that's saying a lot.
Bleacher Report NFL draft lead writer Matt Miller told me people were literally running to see his press conference, and that it may have been one of the best he's ever seen.
RGIII is definitely the talk of the combine.
