Robert Griffin III Combine: Measurables Provide Final Piece to No. 1 Pick Puzzle

Patrick ClarkeJun 7, 2018

We already knew Baylor's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III had the arm and sprinter speed to dominate in the NFL, but we now know he has the measurable size to hold his own in the rough-and-tumble league.

Griffin III measured in around 6'2" and 223 pounds at the scouting combine this past week, and scouts are no longer just drooling over his abilities, but instead tripping over themselves like a nervous teen on a first date.

The debate between Stanford's Andrew Luck and Griffin III for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft has heated up over the past few weeks, and it seems that the Baylor prospect is picking up momentum and climbing big boards just as Cam Newton did a year ago.

Luck may be the prototypical shot-caller under center, but he lacks the Michael Vick-like athleticism to take over games, highlights, merchandise sales and billboards all by himself.

The only knock on Griffin III heading into the combine was his size. Can he see over the pocket? Well of course he can—after all, he threw for 4,293 yards and 37 touchdowns last season with the Baylor Bears.

Can he withstand a beating from NFL defenders? Few people can, but there is no prospect out there in better shape to take a devastating hit than Griffin III. It's hard to imagine Andrew Luck gets better with each sack.

But now that the numbers are in and the physical-measurement-obsessed scouts have all the support they need to justify Griffin III going first overall, the Colts can make their pick.

It all depends on whether they want a Peyton Manning-like pocket passer to carry the torch for the next decade or they want to follow in the Carolina Panthers' footsteps by rebuilding with a multifaceted playmaker.

It's hard to go wrong with either quarterback, but until the combine, scouts and coaches were pointing at the lack of intimidating size as the No. 1 reason not to take Griffin III with the first pick.

That's no longer the case, and the Colts would be idiotic to pass on him.
