NFL Combine 2012: 5 Prospects We're Excited to See
Action at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine is really going to heat up on Sunday, when offensive stars such as quarterback Robert Griffin III of Baylor (who will run but not throw), running back Trent Richardson of Alabama and wide receiver Alshon Jeffery of South Carolina will take the field at Lucas Oil Stadium for workouts.
However, those players are hardly the only ones of interest who will be competing in the "underwear Olympics." Here's a look at a handful of players we'll be watching closely as the day unfolds.
Kendall Wright: WR, Baylor
1 of 5Wide receiver Kendall Wright of Baylor was on the receiving end of many of Robert Griffin III's passes during Griffin's Heisman Trophy-winning 2011 season, reeling in 108 catches for 1,663 yards and 14 touchdowns last year.
The 5'10", 196-pound Wright more than makes up for his lack of size with blazing speed, and if Wright can run a 40-yard dash time in the low 4.3-second range, the senior will cement his draft slot in the middle of the first round in April's NFL draft.
Robert Turbin: RB, Utah State
2 of 5Utah State running back Robert Turbin was wildly productive in the Aggies backfield in 2011. The 5'10", 222-pound junior carried the ball 249 times for 1,517 yards and 19 touchdowns, chipping in another 171 yards in receiving yards.
Turbin is a powerful runner with soft hands, but there are quite a few question marks surrounding his agility and top-end speed, so it's vitally important that Turbin perform well in drills Sunday, especially the 40-yard dash.
Nick Foles: QB, Arizona
3 of 5Nick Foles was one of the few bright spots on a bad team at the University of Arizona last season. The 6'5", 243-pound senior threw for over 4,300 yards along with 28 touchdowns in Tucson.
With Robert Griffin III of Baylor, Andrew Luck of Stanford and Arizona State's Brock Osweiler all electing not to throw at the combine and Ryan Tannehill of Texas A&M nursing an injury, the spotlight will fall squarely on Foles, who has a golden opportunity to bolster his draft stock in Indianapolis.
Mohamed Sanu: WR, Rutgers
4 of 5Rutgers wide receiver Mohamed Sanu enjoyed a fantastic junior season for the Scarlet Knights. The 6'2", 211-pounder from South Brunswick, New Jersey hauled in 115 catches for 1,206 yards and seven touchdowns.
Sanu certainly possesses the prototypical frame that NFL scouts look for in a wideout, but there are some doubters in regards to Sanu's top-gear straight-line speed. Thus, it's essential that Sanu post a decent time in the 40 if he has any dreams of potentially being selected near the end of the first round of April's draft.
Isaiah Pead: RB, Cincinnati
5 of 5Running back Isaiah Pead was the Big East Offensive Player of the Year in 2011 after the 5'10", 197-pound senior racked up nearly 1,600 total yards and scored 15 total touchdowns for the Bearcats.
Pead has added a few pounds since the Senior Bowl, but he is still a bit on the small side for a running back, so it's very important that he dazzle NFL scouts and coaches by showcasing his outstanding speed and agility at the combine.
