NextEra Energy Resources 250 Results: Reaction, Leaders and Post Race Analysis

Ryan RudnanskyJun 1, 2018

The NextEra Energy Resources 250 resembled more of a demolition derby than a truck race on Friday.

But after three accidents extended the race, John King emerged out of the wreckage to claim victory.

King said after the race, via Nascar.SpeedTV.com, "I’m not supposed to be here. Oh, my gosh...I don’t know what to say. It’s a dream come true.”

The first wreck came after Dusty Davis turned Parker Kligerman, collecting other drivers in the process and setting up a green-white-checkered.

In Turn 4 of the restart, Brad Keselowski was turned under multiple trucks, collecting Rick Crawford and Max Gresham.

Then, in the restart of that accident, King clipped the right rear corner of Johnny Sauter's Toyota, turning him into the wall as another caution flag was drawn. Matt Crafton, Brendan Gaughan, David Starr, and Ryan Sieg all found themselves among the wreckage.

The Daytona truck race has become known for crashes throughout the years. The very first year of its existence, in 2000, there was a horrendous wreck involving Geoff Bodine, who suffered serious injuries after his truck burst into flames.

Fortunately on Friday, there were no serious injuries, but the wrecks are becoming a bit of a problem for the event, which does not use restrictor plates. You wonder if changes will be made after the latest destruction.

Interestingly enough, King, the man who nicked Sauter out of the lead, ended up being the winner on Friday. It's his first victory at the Daytona truck race, becoming the 12th champion in the event's history. Todd Bodine is the only two-time winner, capturing the race in 2008 and 2009.

King crossed the finish line ahead of Red Horse Racing teammate Timothy Peters, Justin Lofton, Travis Kvapil and Jason White.
