Nigel Clough's first game in charge of Derby started at a high tempo, with the Rams going on to stun United by taking the lead with a high quality goal as Mile Sterjovski fed the ball into Kris Commons, who let rip with an unstoppable 25-yard bullet into the bottom corner.

Copa Del Rey

Sevilla 2, Deportivo La Coruna 1 (Copa Del Rey, Jan. 7, 2009)

Sevilla’s Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano stuck a perfect free-kick on the half hour mark to take the lead over Deportivo La Coruna. Freddie Kanoute doubled the lead in the 39th minute. Omar Bravo scored a consolation for Depor.

Poli Ejido 3, Espanyol 2 (Copa Del Rey, Jan. 7, 2009)

Moses Hurtado headed home a corner to give Espanyol the lead at Poli Ejido. But after the break Poli, who play in the third tier of the Spanish league, equalised when Jorge Molina scored from the spot before completing the comeback when Julio scored a second after good build up play. Back came Espanyol, Martinez equalising for the La Liga side with a curler. But Poli were not to be denied and Chico rifled a stunner into the top corner—a fitting goal to win any game.

Racing Santander 1, Valencia 1 (Copa Del Rey, Jan. 7, 2009)

Valencia took the lead in the 37th minute when Santander’s Gonzalo Colsa glanced a header past his own goalkeeper. Ezequiel Garay then missed a 49th minute penalty for the hosts, before Mehdi Lacen levelled with a low free-kick which curled around the Valencia wall.

Sporting Gijon 3, Valladolid 1 (Copa Del Rey, Jan. 7, 2009)

In the tie between Sporting Gijon and Valladolid, the hosts gained the advantage when David Barral found space in the box, striking the ball into the top corner. And it was 2-nil minutes later when Barral struck his second of the game with a tidy finish in the box. And Valladolid were dead and buried by halftime, Gonzalez Carmelo adding a third before the break. Fabian Cannobio scored a last minute consolation for Valladolid.

Real Union 0 - Real Betis 1 (Copa Del Rey, January 7, 2009) In the Copa Del Rey, Real Betis took an early lead at Real Union when Damia picked up the ball, burst forward into the box and slipped the ball into the far corner.

Turkish Cup

Fenerbahce 2, Bursaspor 0 (Turkish Cup, Jan. 7, 2009)

A first half Selcuk Sahin header and a second from Roberto Carlos six minutes from time gave Fener the win.

Roma 3, Lanciano 2 (Friendly, Jan. 7, 2009)

Roma won thanks to a double from Mirko Vucinic and a goal from youngster Leandro Greek.

Catania 6, Belpasso 0 (Friendly, Jan. 6, 2009)

Catania score six for the second time in two friendy matches. Niculae Dica and Gianvito Plasmati both claim a brace, and Michele Paolucci and Jorge Martinez scored one each.

Cypriot All-Stars 2, Foreign XI 1 (Exhibition, Jan. 6, 2009)

The match featured a coming together of the best Cypriot players and the best foreign players playing in the Cypriot league, who were chosen by the fans of all the clubs in an online poll.

Guadalajara (Chivas) 3, Atlas 1 (Interliga, Jan. 6, 2009)

Chivas took the lead with a 21st minute penalty from Ramon Morales. Bruno Marioni equalised for Atlas with 15 minutes remaining, but a late brace from Carlos Ochoa gave Chivas the win.

Oman 4, Iraq 0 (Gulf Cup of Nations, Jan. 7, 2009)
