Vancouver Canucks Snap Detroit Red Wings' Record 23-Straight Home Wins

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

As great as the Detroit Red Wings have been at home throughout the years, you figured the Vancouver Canucks would give them a run for their money at Joe Louis Arena on Thursday.

The Red Wings had just lost against the Chicago Blackhawks and the Canucks were one point behind them in the Western Conference standings.

And give them a run for their money they did, as the Canucks won a thrilling 4-3 game as Alex Burrows came through in the shootout, per CBSSports.com.

Before Burrows, left winger Daniel Sedin was the hero, scoring two goals in regulation and tying it up at 3-3 with just 16 seconds remaining.

What Does It Mean?

The Canucks are now almost neck-and-neck with the Red Wings in the Western Conference standings. They are one point behind Detroit in the battle for the No. 1 seed.

Vancouver, who made it to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, look just as strong this year and ready for a deep run in the playoffs. Capturing the No. 1 seed would be a great way for them to enter the postseason.

The Red Wings, of course, aren't going to give up the No. 1 seed easily. This is a team that won the championship four years ago and went to the Finals three years ago.

What Happens Next?

There's still some hockey to be played. Anything can happen at this point.

The Wings and Canucks are likely going to go down to the wire this season and I wouldn't be surprised if the No. 1 seed is determined in the last game of the regular season.

The two powerhouses don't play each other for the rest of the regular season, so they're going to have to make it count against other opponents.

The Canucks certainly helped themselves with their harrowing victory on Thursday, though.
