Pitt Football: Paul Chryst Coaching Staff Close to Being Set for a Second Time

Matt ShetlerJun 6, 2018

From the time that Michael Haywood was hired as Pitt head coach in December of 2011, Panthers coaches haven't stuck around very long.

The latest casualty to the Pitt staff came when new offensive coordinator Bob Bostad, who came to Pitt with Chryst from Wisconsin, left to join Greg Schiano's staff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The loss of Bostad, who will coach the Bucs offensive line, really is no big deal at all.

Since then, Chryst has restructured the staff, elevating Joe Rudolph to offensive coordinator. Rudolph also came over with Chryst from the Badgers. Originally slated to be the offensive line coach, Rudolph's bump in stature is significant, but it really doesn't mean that much.

The truth of the matter is that it really doesn't matter who the Panthers offensive coordinator is going to be in Chryst's first season.

As with any head coach in his first season, expect Chryst to be very hands on. That's especially the case with the offense. Chryst brings his offense over from Wisconsin so you can expect him to have a big role in what the Panthers do this season.

In addition to Rudolph being elevated, the same can be said for Jim Hueber, who was originally pencilled in to be the tight ends coach, a duty that Rudolph will now also handle. Hueber will now serve as the Panthers offensive line coach, a position he's familiar with, having coached some fine college and pro linemen in the past.

Hueber was most recently the assistant offensive line coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2006-10 and also served as an assistant at Wisconsin from 1992-2005, working with the Badgers' running backs and offensive linemen.

At Wisconsin, Hueber helped develop three first team All-American offensive linemen: Aaron Gibson, Chrus McIntosh and Joe Thomas. All three became first-round draft selections in the NFL.

After the promotions of Rudolph and Hueber, that leaves Chryst with just two voids left to fill on his staff, a running backs and a quarterbacks coach.
