Ross Taylor Heats Things Up at Cake Tin

Chris BourneJan 6, 2009

Some Explosive By Ross Taylor and beautiful economical bowling from Kiwi Skipper Daniel Vettori were the key ingredients to win the third One Day International against the West Indies and level the five-match series 1-1 at the Cake tin in Wellington.

In a cloudy looking Wellington, New Zealand won the toss and sent the West Indies in to bat first where the kiwis took early wickets. A scoreless Xavier Marcial was the first to go after edging a Kyle Mills delivery straight to second slip Jamie How, giving Mills His first wicket for the match.

Three overs later and Tim Southee had his first wicket; dismissing Ramneresh Sarwan for five, with special thanks to an excellent leaping catch from the second slip Jamie How.

Chris Gayle looked to be on fire after getting a good start but a good slower ball from Kyle Mills deceived the West Indies captain and was edged on to his middle stump, Chris Gayle Out for 18.

Shawn Findlay was next West Indian to come and go from the crease out for just eight after a Tim Southee in-swinger had Findlay’s stumps in tatters.

2008 ICC player of the year Shivnarine Chanderpauls was looking really good while at the other end of the crease his batting partners Danish Ramdin, Kieran Pollard, Jerome Taylor and Darren Powell all fell cheaply to Kiwi skipper Daniel Vettori. Vettori bowled all of his 10 over containing four wickets.

Big Jesse Ryder was the next kiwi to take a wicket; denying Shivnarine Chanderpaul a half-Century, out LBW for 45. The two tail-enders, Nikita Miller and Fidel Edwards, hung around at the end to build a partnership of 27 until Edwards skied one high in the air giving Jamie How his third catch of the match and giving Jeetan Patel his only wicket of the match.

A good all-around performance by the New Zealand Bowlers and Fielders saw the West Indian batsman restricted a score 128.

After a 45-minute break, the West Indian players took to the field and the New Zealand batsman began their run chase of 129.

The New Zealand openers Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum got off to a good start putting on 34 runs for the first wicket partnership before McCullum played a very McCullum like cut-shot, but edged high and caught by Ramneresh Sarwan at third man giving Darren Powell his first wicket of the match, McCullum out for 18.

Jesse Ryder (14 runs) was the next to fall sending the ball low and straight to Nikita Miller standing at cover, Darren Powell’s second wicket and on a hat trick.

New Zealand’s next man Ross Taylor defended the hat-trick ball back to the bowler. Darren Powell picked up his third when Jamie How was caught pulling to deep square-leg, a running flyer of a catch by Jerome Taylor, How dismissed for 0. Ross Taylor was the top run scorer with an unbeaten 51 including five 4s and three big 6s.

Taylor with Daniel Flynn(23) put together a match winning partnership of 89 run which won the Kiwis the game in the end. New Zealand wins by 7 wickets with 29.3 overs remaining and put the

The Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori was named player of the match for his bowling figures of 10 overs, three maidens, 20 runs, and four wickets.

The fourth match is in Auckland on 10 January.
