2012 NFL Draft: First-Round Names with Second-Round Grades
The 2012 NFL Scouting Combine is a make-or-break event for a number of players in this year's draft class. Not just hyped-up names we learned in recent weeks, but names of players we've known for quite some time.
As the draft nears, we continue to try and make heads and tails of these prospects. There are a few big names, first-round-caliber names, that aren't carrying legitimate first-round grades:
Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina
Time and time again we've talked about Alshon Jeffery's future in the NFL, and there is only one legitimate conclusion: He will only be as good as he wants to be.
There are rumors of the 6'5" receiver potentially weighing 250 pounds and conflicting reports claiming the receiver is now 217 pounds.
Jeffery didn't dominate like he should have this year, and teams know that he's the type of player who can dominate when on top of his game.
There may not be a player with more on the line in Indianapolis than Jeffery. He's not worth the risk of a first-round pick.
Vontaze Burfict, ILB, Arizona State
The Sun Devils linebacker has been well-known since his freshman season. He plays with a rare tenacity and aggressiveness and loves to hit.
Unfortunately, that very same aggressiveness gets him into trouble, and he's extremely immature to boot.
For all his physical gifts, his attitude detracts greatly from his draft stock. There are some questions about his lateral quickness as well.
Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
Everyone got a taste of Dennard last season when he shined opposite Prince Amukamara. That was the best he's played, as he came into this season with high expectations but battled injuries.
His speed has been challenged multiple times, and his Senior Bowl performance didn't help one bit.
He's a physical player with great instincts, but he lacks ball skills and a first-round grade.
Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan
The Spartans' massive defensive tackle is a disruptive force with great upside. He's a well-known name and can dominate games when he's on form.
Unfortunately, he struggles to stay on form and cannot be trusted.
The talent is there, as well as upside, but he's not a player that deserves to carry a first-round grade.
