St. Louis Rams Draft Order 2012: Why the Rams Hold a Lot of Power at No. 2

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

As things stand right now, the Indianapolis Colts appear set to select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the top pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

At this point that much appears inevitable.

That makes the St. Louis Rams the ultimate power players in this year's draft because they hold the No. 2 pick and should have plenty of options.

The Rams finished 2-14 this season, so they could obviously use help all over their roster. That leads me to believe they will be pushing hard to trade the second overall selection in order to move down and bring back a wealth of players and picks in return.

More picks mean the ability to rebuild the team faster around franchise quarterback Sam Bradford.

There is sure to be interest from quarterback-needy teams who would want to move up in order to select Baylor's Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 pick.

The Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins all have big question marks at the quarterback and will probably at least explore the opportunity to move up to take RG3.

That said, if St. Louis doesn't get a deal they like, there are solid options available.

The Rams need help at receiver, and Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon has the talent to profile as a Pro Bowl-caliber wideout.

St. Louis also appears ready to end the Jason Smith experiment at tackle, and while Rodger Saffold has done a nice job holding down the left side, USC's Matt Kalil profiles as a future All-Pro blind side protector.

The best part about the Rams' situation is that they don't need to trade down, but the option will certainly be there. That means that if a potential trade partner low-balls them, they can just hold on to the pick and get better by adding an extremely talented player.

Right now St. Louis is sitting pretty at No. 2 and should have plenty of options available as the draft approaches.
