NFL Rumors: Ranking the 10 Best Sources to Know During the Offseason

Brandon AlisogluFeb 22, 2012

The most valuable commodity in the NFL rumors game is information. Those that have it tend to stand out from the crowd.

Every insider measures his worth by being the first one to discover the most recent trade or which player is going to be hit with the franchise tag.

Of course, speed is worthless without accuracy. If the information is determined false, then every media outlet will be sure to pass along the credit for being first.

Some sources made this ranking because they will keep you abreast of every contract development. Conversely, some sites allow for easy access to the avalanche of knowledge available.

Regardless, all of the following sites and Twitter feeds will keep you up to date on the happenings of today's NFL.

Honorable Withdrawal: Bleacher Report

1 of 11

Bleacher Report offers the most comprehensive coverage available. A large pool of contributors combined with an ever-growing list of professionals has elevated B/R to new levels.

The site now offers full-time NFL draft experts, and the list of lead writers capable of expertly breaking down the details of football is expanding.

If there is a rumor out there, the writers here will provide you with at least one piece on each angle. Thus, you will find someone you agree with, and another you can berate.

Since the inclusion of B/R would only invite unwarranted bias, they have been honorably withdrawn as a candidate.

It's up you to determine where they would rank. We appreciate your support.

10. Peter King

2 of 11

Sports Illustrated's Peter King is everywhere. From television to Twitter to his regular weekly columns, he brings the heavy-hitting analysis everywhere he goes.

King rarely breaks news or indulges in rumors, thus his low ranking among his peers in this context. The rumors beat is a young man's game, and King has earned the right to concentrate on analysis.

However, he still has his sources. King recently proclaimed that the Minnesota Vikings would get a stadium deal worked out, and they did.

He may not be the first to break a rumor, but his Twitter feed is a must-follow for football fans.

9. ESPN RumorCentral

3 of 11

For a lot of people, ESPN is their first and only source of sports information. The media giant stands at the top of the hill trying to ward off those clamoring for the top spot.

The ESPN Insider RumorCentral has the same display as many other sites. The most recent story is at the top with time-stamped mini-articles in descending order.

The clean format is enhanced with the inclusion of various conjectures to go along with the latest rumors. The extensive network of NFL bloggers keeps the section filled to the brim with time-killing content.

The source itself is of outstanding quality. However, ESPN Insider RumorCentral is held back because you have to pay for access.

8. Pro Sports Daily

4 of 11

Pro Sports Daily is a great feed that compiles articles from a wide variety of sites. The range includes national media to local newspapers so as to provide in-depth coverage.

The site itself offers news across all sports, but the focus here is on the NFL rumors section

The format is not visually engaging.

However, the volume of information presented is tremendous. On February 21st, they compiled 17 stories on a light-traffic (NFL-wise) day.

7. Scout with Foxsports.com on MSN

5 of 11

Scout has a more visually appealing website than Pro Sports Daily.

The layout differs because Scout has more graphics and orders the main stories in terms of importance. That alone can make the site more valuable to the casual fan, as they will get the info they need without sorting through the minutia.

The stories themselves contain all the pertinent details from stats to history.  The breadth of coverage is quite comprehensive, and each team has its own page linked to the NFL page.

6. National Football Post

6 of 11

If you have not visited the National Football Post yet, consider your fanhood questioned. The site is fairly new and constantly evolving to ensure that everybody comes away with all the information they require.

The homepage has a "Hot News & Rumors" section up front and center to keep you in the loop. The amount of information is similar to the other sites, but all of the content is original as opposed to Pro Sports Daily.

They have a growing number of respected writers who are capable of deep analysis. The only evident problem is that they rarely break any news.

5. Andrew Brandt

7 of 11

Andrew Brandt stays on top of the rumors game because he has quite a few connections. He is the president of the aforementioned National Football Post and an NFL Business Analyst for ESPN.

Therefore, his Twitter feed is a virtual cornucopia of NFL information.

Brandt not only succinctly provides all the pertinent details, but he also gives a quick thought on each matter.

4. Aaron Wilson

8 of 11

When it comes to information and breaking news, Aaron Wilson is always near the front of the pack. He has worked with the National Football Post and Pro Football Talk, and he now appears to be the main contributor to the previously ranked Scout.com.

His lofty ranking here is based on his Twitter feed—@ravensinsder. Wilson's Twitter handles spawns from his work the Baltimore Ravens beat writer for the Carroll County Times and Annapolis Capitol.

Wilson not only provides the latest insight on anything relative to the Ravens, but he's also constantly dropping knowledge from across the league.

3. Pro Football Talk

9 of 11

Pro Football Talk is an excellent source for rumors and news. The site literally has a section entitled the "Rumor Mill."

Mike Florio is the main contributor to the site and is also the editor and founder. He writes multiple daily updates based upon his own sources and stories published by other media outlets.

The interface on the main page allows you to skip directly to the story that peaks your interest. This gives the site an advantage over the constant scrolling required by ESPN Insider RumorCentral.

Lastly, the content is not limited to rumors directly related to the field.

Contributions range from the business side of the NFL to personal stories, such as the recent death of Tom Brady's quarterback guru.

2. Jay Glazer

10 of 11

The competition was so close that Jay Glazer certainly has a claim to the No. 1 spot. Regardless, even the most casual fan should follow Glazer on Twitter.

Glazer has made his bones in the industry as the news-breaking stud at Fox Sports. Very little happens in the world of pro football without him having the insider's scoop.

Perhaps the main reason he is one of the best is the camaraderie he seems to possess with the players.

Glazer regularly trains NFL guys using mixed martial arts methods. Clay Matthews Jr. spent a summer in the program and won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year the following season.

1. Adam Schefter

11 of 11

Anybody who has the slightest passing interest in the happenings of the NFL knows Adam Schefter.

The ESPN rumor guru is at the forefront of every story. If there is something to know, it's a lock that it will appear on Schefter's Twitter feed momentarily.

He seemingly works the phones constantly considering you can see one in his hand during his takes on SportsCenter

Nobody puts out as much useful information as Schefter. If you don't have a Twitter handle, he is a reason to get one.
