Jason Kidd Passes Michael Jordan for 2nd on the All-Time Steals List

Maxwell OgdenJun 7, 2018

Last night in Dallas, history was made.

With the smooth stroke of a free throw, Dirk Nowitzki moved into 20th on the all-time scoring list. While this has drawn quite a bit of attention, it was far from the only achievement worth noting.

Quietly but surely, Nowitzki's veteran teammate Jason Kidd became the second-greatest steal artist of all-time.

With the interception of an errant Ray Allen pass, Jason Kidd passed Michael Jordan for second on the all-time steals list. That was one of three steals on the evening, an incredible number considering he was given just 23 minutes of playing time.

The third and final steal gave him 2,517 career steals, 821 more than the next active player—Kobe Bryant—who has 1,696.

Said Kidd about his success:

"

I've just been in the right place at the right time, understanding guys' tendencies, watching film early on in my career and just been lucky to be in the league long enough to get in the way of some passes.

Kidd continued by stating that:

Just being able to pass [Jordan] in something is an honor in itself. When you talk about defense he played both sides of the ball. (John) Stockton and (Michael) Jordan are the two best at what they do. When you talk about guards those two are the best all-time.

"

After all of the glory in his 18-year-career, it's time the question is presented: where does Jason Kidd rank all-time?

Kidd sits alone at second place on both the all-time steals and assists list.

He also ranks third on the all-time three-point field goals list. Combine that with his recently won NBA Championship and it becomes fair game to rank Jason Kidd with some of the all-time greats.

Aside from John Stockton, no point guard has ever achieved what Jason Kidd has over the span of a career. With that being said, Kidd was able to achieve one thing that always eluded Stockton: winning a title.

Let the debate begin.

Is Kidd the best point guard of all-time? Even if he's not, can we begin calling him one of the best to ever play? Maybe I'm alone, but I certainly will.
