Andrew Luck Combine: Star QB Has No Room for Error Heading into Combine

Gabe ZaldivarJun 4, 2018

Andrew Luck is about to embark on the official first leg of his NFL campaign. It involves showing off the goods that are supposed to be the best around. Any sign to the counter of that would be disastrous.

It doesn't happen often, but Andrew Luck is heading into the combine with a huge cushion between him and the next quarterback to presumably be on everyone's draft board.

Robert Griffin III is an elite quarterback with a huge arm and the speed that is coveted in modern-day football, but he the chasm is wide between he and Luck.

You could almost refer to Luck as, "Colts Quarterback Andrew Luck." That is how he will enter the combine this week, with the full complement of confidence of a franchise that is itching to call his name on draft day.

But what if he fails?

As we now know, Luck will not be throwing at the NFL combine, and a good portion of that may have come from the Colts' urging on the matter.

IndyStar columnist Bob Kravitz reported via Twitter Luck's willingness to throw at the combine before being shut down by his would-be handlers.

"

Andrew Luck was willing to throw for teams (Colts) at the combine, but was told by teams (Colts) just to throw at pro day March 22.

"

There is also the feel-good story breathing down his neck in the form of Robert Griffin III. Nobody could fathom RG3 taking the top spot, and I am not about to say that will happen here, but it could.

Griffin will test well in most areas, including speed and quickness. He will interview well and I am confident any measurements on his height and weight will be a non-issue.

Griffin comes in as the underdog trying to do the impossible, and Luck is the favorite with everything to lose. We are fortunate to have this kind of high drama awaiting a week that is usually mindless 40-yard dashes and bench presses.

The Colts are still in a volatile situation with Peyton Manning—a scenario that will define this franchise for the next decade.

Indianapolis is not about to throw their weight behind Luck without scrutinizing every last facet of his game and talents.

Luck has the No. 1 overall pick nearly guaranteed, but it's not locked up. With a stirring performance by RG3 and the slightest hiccup by Luck, things could get immensely interesting heading into the pro day round of the draft process.
