Robert Griffin III Combine: RG3 Makes Right Call by Not Throwing in Indianapolis

Wes ODonnellJun 1, 2018

There is something to be said for a top quarterback prospect wanting to throw at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, but there isn't a ton for him to gain from it.

Throwing to several different receivers for the first time ever in a group setting won't change a quarterback's draft stock much, if at all. For top quarterbacks like Robert Griffin III, waiting until a pro day is simply a better opportunity.

According to an AP report, via Sports Illustrated, RG3 will do just that:

Along with the interviews later this week at the NFL combine, Griffin plans to run the 40-yard dash and do other drills.

But Griffin said he likely won't throw in Indianapolis. He will instead save that for his pro day March 21, which has been moved up a day to avoid going at the same time as the pro day for Luck, the Heisman runner-up.

"

For Griffin, talking—not throwing—is the most important thing.

Teams have seen his arm and his athleticism. They might be interested to see his speed in the 40-yard dash, which he hints could be sub-4.4, according to CBS Sports' Will Brinson, but they'll be more interested in what he has to say about this offense, that offense, this throw and that throw.

Teams want to get inside the head of the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner; they want to know everything he knows.

Griffin is ready for that, too:

"

I'm excited to wow them in the interviews with the type of offense that we run, just so they can understand it's not as simple as some people make our spread out to be. It's a different kind of spread...Although I don't agree with it, but people say I just burst on the scene this year, so no one knows much about me, whether NFL GMs or analysts, so I get a chance to put my best foot forward.

"

Cam Newton threw at the combine last year, and it did nothing to help or hurt his draft stock. Teams were more concerned with what he had to say.

In a lot of ways, the two are similar in terms of star power.

While Griffin was very productive a year ago and has been around since his freshman season, he didn't gain national recognition until this year.

Like Newton, Griffin was the most exciting player in the country, is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and is currently the most talked about prospect in the NFL draft.

If not for Andrew Luck, the best quarterback prospect we've seen in quite some time, RG3 could very easily have risen up to the No. 1 spot the way Newton did a year ago. In fact, it is still a slight possibility.

But RG3's decision to focus on everything but throwing in Indianapolis is, without question, the right call.
