NFL Combine 2012: Impressive Physical Specimens Who Will Be NFL Busts

Wes ODonnellJun 3, 2018

There is a lot to love about the NFL Scouting Combine, but  "workout warriors" is not one of them.

Every year we see college players who look better in shorts and a t-shirt than in pads and a helmet. Physically, they are imposing, but on the field they're anything but.

In this day and age of strength and conditioning training we are seeing athletes like never before. Unfortunately, that doesn't always translate to success on the football field.

The 2012 NFL draft class will not be without a workout warrior or two; it is simply an unfortunate truth that they exist.

Here is a quick look at some of the best physical specimens who won't pan out in the NFL.

Zach Brown, OLB, UNC

The senior Tar Heel will shine in every single physical workout. At 6'1", 236 pounds, he's basically the size of a big safety and has better speed than half the players that actually play in the secondary.

Rumors indicate that he could run in the 4.5, sub-4.5 range in the 40-yard dash and you simply don't see that at outside linebacker.

The problem is that people are still waiting for Brown to make a tackle. He'll look the part, but he's "buyer beware" all the way.

Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

While most of the focus at the combine will be on Wright's college quarterback Robert Griffin III, the senior wide receiver is going to make plenty of noise on his own.

Wright is a tremendously gifted athlete and can jump through the roof on top of clocking in with dazzling speed. At 5'10", 190 pounds, most expect to see an extremely fluid athlete (assuming he has healed from the ankle injury that kept him out of the Senior Bowl) dominate the competition.

The concern is that he may never fully develop. He'll be able to run 9-routes all day long, but if he doesn't learn his trade in the NFL then he may never be anything more than a one-trick pony.

David Wilson, RB, Virginia Tech

The Hokies running back is going to very much look the part of a superstar. The junior runner is approximately 5'10", 205 pounds and is solid muscle. He's expected to clock in with a sub-4.5 40-yard dash time and he'll shine in explosive activities as well.

The question marks come when wondering what he'll actually do with all this muscle and athleticism.

He was extremely productive this past season, but does he have the patience and vision to succeed in the NFL?

Quinton Coples, DE, UNC

The big Tar Heel defender may not be the most elite athlete, but physically he's one of the most dominating this draft has to offer.

Coples stands just shy of 6'6" and weighs 281 pounds. He's going to run well and he has great versatility.

The question is, what will he do with all of it?

His work ethic was questioned more than once this season and there was even talk of him turning down a coach's request to shift back to defensive tackle. That is unacceptable in the NFL.
