Iverson's Soccer Future, LINternet Puns Gone Too Far: BR5 2/21
Welcome to BR5—your source for sports and pop culture news.
Today’s episode of BR5 gets you up-to-date on everything from Allen Iverson's career move to boxing brawl.
Allen Iverson needs money to pay off a jewelry bill of around $850,000. Where will AI get this money? Maybe playing basketball again, which of course is how he earned around $150 million during his career. Money that may or may not have disappeared.
But there are other ways he could earn it. How about playing soccer? An indoor soccer league is offering the “Answer” $20,000 per game and several reachable bonuses to play for their league. Rich Randall, vice president of the The Rochester Lancers of the Major Indoor Soccer League says the offer is real and that, "Allen Iverson is one of the premier athletes of our time." No word if Iverson can actually play soccer or if he even likes the sport.
Kobe Bryant desperately wants to save his marriage, even if he goes broke doing it. Sources at TMZ are reporting that Kobe is aggressively trying to win Vanessa back, vowing that he'll never stray again. He even went so far as resurrecting his old expensive jewelry gift trick to seal the deal. No telling if it's working since Vanessa was spotted in New York City this weekend apartment shopping with the kids.
No one said it’s easy being a coach. You have to be a leader, watch film all day, keep the team up after losses and of course duck when one of your players' moms tries to sucker punch you.
Yahoo! Sports reports that basketball mom Nakiea Hampton allegedly beat up her son’s middle school coach when her boy was accidentally hit in the face with a ball recently. The story goes that the young man got hit with the basketball and immediately called his mother to let her know.
She in turn jumped in her car and made it in time to the practice session and well, “handled her business” with her fists. She left the poor coach with bruises and scratches on his face and a trip to the hospital. She in turn was charged with felony battery on a teacher, disorderly conduct, cruelty to children and disrupting public schools.
It was a busy weekend in all things Jeremy Lin...the Lin puns have officially gone too far...except on SNL. First ESPN.com had to fire an employee for posting a racially-insensitive Lin-inspired headline, then SNL mocked everybody involved, making it all better again.
ESPN should probably leave the Lin puns to the comedy writers from now on. But, despite the headline scandal, Lin continued to dazzle at the Garden on Sunday, leading the Knicks with 28 points over the Dallas Mavericks. But the New Jersey Nets brought Lin and the Knicks back to earth, holding him to 21 points in a 100-92 loss Monday night.
Jeremy even got around to setting the record straight on his rumored relationship with Kim Kardashian. Speaking to ESPN's Rachel Nichols, Lin said he's not sure where these rumors get started, and that he's not sure he's her type.
If you thought you had a bad weekend, look no further than boxer Dereck Chisora, because his was probably worse. Chisora kicked things off by bitchslapping Vitali Klitschko at their pre-fight press conference, then spitting water in brother Wladimir Klitschko's face.
Vitali then returned the gesture by beating him up during the match that followed. Then, the WBC hit Chisora with a fine for his slap. As if that wasn't humbling enough, the post-fight press conference erupted into a Jerry Springer-esque melee, with British boxer David Haye calling out Chisora to fight.
Apparently, Chisora didn't feel the need to get managers involved in setting up an actual bout with Haye, taking him up on his offer and going at him right there. The ensuing free-for-all resulted in cameras and bottles flying, and Chisora being questioned by police on a possible assault charge.
Here’s a question, where was Vitali Klitschko and how come neither one of these guys wanted to fight him again? Isn’t he the one with the belt?
