WWE SmackDown Preview: Champion vs. Champion, a War for General Manager and More

Kyle SchadlerJun 7, 2018

Tonight, WWE SmackDown goes live as the Road to WrestleMania continues!

This past Sunday at the Elimination Chamber, Daniel Bryan managed to retain his title against five other superstars but his celebration was short-lived.

WWE has confirmed one match as of this writing, but with the events of the pay-per-view there are a few more things to consider.

Will Beth Phoenix Find a New Challenger?

After defeating Tamina Snuka at the Elimination Chamber PPV, Beth Phoenix has beaten every single Diva on the active roster.

For weeks, the Glamazon has bragged that she had no competition and that she would remain the Divas champion forever.

Beth is without a doubt the most dominant champion the Divas division has seen in quite some time, and there may be no stopping her reign at the top.

Last night on Monday Night Raw, the WWE Universe saw the division represented by Eve, the Bella Twins, Kelly Kelly and Aksana, but the champion was nowhere to be seen.

Was she scouting her next victim?

Will Beth Phoenix appear tonight on the live SmackDown to look for someone else to fight or will that someone else find her first?

The Battle for Sole General Manager Continues

At the Elimination Chamber, John Laurinaitis announced that he was trying to get the board of directors to give Teddy Long a performance review, much like they gave him.

Mr. Excitement was then endorsed by Mark Henry and the returning Alberto Del Rio and Christian.

Last night on Raw, SmackDown’s general manager Teddy Long appeared and he and Laurinaitis had an exchange of words.

Teddy felt the same way as Johnny Ace and David Otunga; he too thought there should be one general manager for both shows.

He thought that the WWE Universe should decide, though, not the board of directors.

Laurinaitis didn’t share that sentiment and a match was booked that saw both general managers at ringside.

Laurinaitis’ sidekick Otunga took on Teddy Long’s handpicked opponent, Ezekiel Jackson, later on in the night and the lawyer from Harvard picked up the win.

Will John Laurinaitis appear on SmackDown to confront Teddy Long much like Teddy did to Laurinaitis last night?

If so, will Teddy have another opponent for David Otunga?

Will Sheamus Continue His Dominance Heading Into WrestleMania?

Since being drafted to SmackDown in the annual WWE Draft, the Celtic Warrior Sheamus has become a dominant force.

When he turned into a face and was given the nickname the Great White, there seemed to be no stopping him.

Sheamus mowed down opponent after opponent, whether he was taking on a superstar from SmackDown or even Raw.

Sheamus has won every feud he’s been in since becoming a good guy and he continued his dominating ways as he entered into the Royal Rumble match.

The Great White was certainly a favorite to win, but most people were expecting Chris Jericho to gain the victory.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Sheamus win the match, but what title would he be going for?

Would he challenge CM Punk or Daniel Bryan? The WWE Universe found out that answer as he took out Daniel Bryan at the Elimination Chamber.

The World Heavyweight Championship match was set for WrestleMania and Sheamus will be co-headlining the event.

Last night on Raw, Sheamus ran over Mark Henry on his Road to WrestleMania and he took out the World’s Strongest Man.

Will the Great White Sheamus continue to dominate tonight on SmackDown? If so, who will be the unlucky opponent?

Champion vs. Champion: CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan

Both the WWE and World heavyweight champion had uphill battles at the Elimination chamber PPV.

CM Punk and Daniel Bryan had to face five other superstars each inside the chamber but both champions managed to retain their titles.

As Bryan celebrated his win, he found out that Sheamus had chosen his title for WrestleMania so the world champion knew who his opponent for the big event was.

CM Punk was without an opponent, though, but found out last night on Raw.

After a 10-man battle royal, Chris Jericho eliminated the Big Show to receive a shot at CM Punk and the WWE Championship.

Both championship matches are set for WrestleMania but tonight the champions must worry about one another as they go one-on-one!

These two superstars know each other very well from their days on the independent circuit and this should produce a great match.

We must factor in Jericho and Sheamus, as one, if not both, may very well get involved here.

The last time these two men faced was after the Royal Rumble and Bryan won by disqualification after Jericho interfered and ultimately attacked Punk.

Who will come out on top of this champion vs. champion encounter? Will their WrestleMania opponents get involved somehow?

Tonight’s SmackDown comes to you live and with this being the Road to WrestleMania; it should be a great showing from the Blue Brand.

Will it be? Tune in to find out!
