Peyton Manning Trade Rumors: Star QB Would Be Wise to Stay with Colts

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

Peyton Manning rumors have been swirling since the season ended, but it's time to consider the more obvious course of action, which is the star quarterback staying in Indianapolis.

This is at the heart of John Clayton's thoughts on the matter. When you consider all the possible trade scenarios, the only rumor that makes sense is the one from ESPN's football guru, and that's for Manning to stay put.

"

Pressed for a solution to the situation, I'd say the best thing is for Manning and Colts owner Jim Irsay to work out a revised contract in order for him to stay. Irsay said last week he would like that to happen, but the decision must be Manning's.

This follows a myriad of rumors, most of them containing teams that are waiting like vultures for Manning to be released.

Dan Pompel of the National Football Post reported on the Seattle Seahawks and them being the front-runners to land Manning if he were indeed released.

"

Based on the buzz around the league, the Seahawks could be the early front-runner for Peyton Manning, assuming he is released. Pete Carroll needs a quarterback and is believed to have a strong interest in at least exploring Manning. The Seahawks could offer Manning an attractive scenario...

"

However, Pompel goes on to say that Reggie Wayne could go to a new team as part of a package deal. That may take some of the sting away in not being a Colts QB.

All the while, I have to consider Clayton's advice that the best trade out there for Manning is in fact no trade.

You will struggle to find a team out there right now that will trade for a QB who just had another neck procedure when he may in fact be released within the month.

That takes most trade possibilities off the table and gives the scenario of Manning being a free agent shortly.

If that's the case, any new team would want to check under the hood and see what the arm looks like before any contract is offered. He may be fine to practice, but that hardly means his arm and conditioning is up to game speed.

It will take a great deal of time before Manning can lead a team on the field. He can get that in Indianapolis with an organization that will be fine with him coming along slowly.

Clayton's on the right track in thinking that Andrew Luck will allow the Colts to have a QB in case Manning needs more time. The franchises that need Manning don't have that luxury.

It may be awkward, but the Colts are the best possible situation for Manning at this point in time.
