Tim Tebow: John Elway Playing Dangerous Game Toying with Broncos QB

Josh MartinJun 5, 2018

Competition can be and typically is a good thing in the NFL. But in the case of Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos, engineering a battle at quarterback may well backfire if mishandled by the front office and coaching staff.

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the Broncos are looking to add two new signal-callers—one in the NFL draft and one via free agency—to provide depth and push Tebow in practice.

Denver certainly needs some help under center at the moment, with Adam Weber currently listed as the only other quarterback on the roster (Brady Quinn is an unrestricted free agent and all but gone according to Klis' colleague at the Post, Jeff Legwold).

So, in theory, whatever additions John Elway and company make shouldn't have much effect, if any, on Tebow's ability to retain his spot atop the depth chart, of which he's assured only heading into training camp.

However, Tebow was thought to have the job locked up when camp opened last summer, before the former Heisman Trophy winner stunk it up in practice so badly that he was demoted to third-string duty, behind Kyle Orton and Quinn.

Neither of those two are in Denver anymore, so Tebow will be the team's elder statesman at the position by default.

And with the help of UCLA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone, with whom Tebow is currently working on his game, the Broncos QB will hopefully improve enough as a passer to warrant his incumbency. Tebow isn't likely to be intimidated by the competition, not after overcoming his roster burial to become the most polarizing sensation in the NFL this past season.

But, if, for whatever reason, Tebow struggles in camp and the new guys shine, the Broncos might just find themselves embroiled in a bit of deja vu.

Suppose Elway and Fox aren't particularly impressed by Tebow's development, choosing instead to glom onto another new guy.

What then? Do they simply discount the impact Tebowmania had on the team last season? Does an AFC West title and a playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers simply go by the wayside in favor of the flavor of the month?

The competition in the Mile High City isn't likely to be so dramatic, though what exactly isn't theatrical when Tim Tebow's involved?
