2012 NFL Mock Draft: Analyzing Matt Miller's Latest Mock for Each AFC North Team
The NFL draft is still two months away but the scouting combine kicks off this week, meaning that draft stocks are about to rise and fall considerably. Prior to that time, however, it's still possible to predict which players a team may be targeting.
Bleacher Report's draft expert Matt Miller dutifully updates his first round mock draft every week. Here is what I think of his projections for every pick in the AFC North.
Cleveland Browns (Round 1: Picks 4, 22)
Matt Miller's picks: No. 4, RB Trent Richardson, Alabama; No. 22, WR Kendall Wright, Baylor
If the ultimate landing spot for Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III is important to you, then pay very close attention to what the Cleveland Browns do in free agency.
If the Browns retain running back Peyton Hillis, but at low cost, they could still end up taking Alabama running back Trent Richardson with their No. 4 overall pick. However, if they sign him to a deal befitting a starting running back, then that's an important clue as to what their first round draft intentions truly are.
Last week, NFL Network's Mike Mayock said that it would be a smart move and good fit for the Cleveland Browns to trade their two first round picks (and likely also their sixth) to the St. Louis Rams to move up to the No. 2 spot and snag Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III.
It's certainly not out of the question for the team. While I fully believe that, barring trading up for Griffin, the Browns will take Richardson and then wide receiver Kendall Wright (or another receiver, perhaps) with their two first round picks, the Griffin option is very much in play.
Cincinnati Bengals (Round 1: Picks 17, 21)
Matt Miller's picks: No. 17, CB Stephon Gilmore, South Carolina; No. 21, RB Chris Polk, Washington
I am in full agreement with Matt Miller that the Bengals use their two first round picks on a cornerback and a running back. When it comes to the corner they select, my guess is they take the best available one still on the board instead of particularly targeting either one.
Gilmore is a great choice for Cincinnati. He's worth starting right away and has special teams capabilities, and, as Miller notes, had eight interceptions and seven sacks in his three seasons with South Carolina.
I really like Washington's Chris Polk for the Bengals in the first round. Though not everyone is sold on Polk being a first rounder, I am, as is Miller. Polk is fast and versatile and adds a level of dynamism to the Bengals' running game which is sorely needed.
Even if Cincy picks up a veteran running back in free agency, I still see them making the move for Polk in the first round.
Pittsburgh Steelers (Round 1: Pick 24)
Matt Miller's pick: G Cordy Glenn, Georgia
Georgia guard Cordy Glenn's name has been linked to a number of teams in the first round, making the Pittsburgh Steelers' chances to snag him at No. 24 fairly difficult. If they are dead set on him, I could see them jumping up a few spots to draft him. But chances are they will wait and hope that he's still on the board by the time they pick.
Bottom line is that the Steelers need to bolster their offensive line with younger, talented players. Depth and durability were an issue for them in 2011, so they need to pick up a start-worthy offensive lineman, ideally a first-rounder.
They could go linebacker with this pick if they aren't sold on the offensive linemen still available should Glenn be spoken for. But I doubt it. The Steelers will select Glenn or go with another offensive guard.
Baltimore Ravens (Round 1: Pick 29)
Matt Miller's pick: OT Mike Adams, Ohio State
The Baltimore Ravens have needs on both sides of the ball and very well could choose Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams with their first round pick.
Guard Ben Grubbs might be a free-agency loss for the team if they choose to use the franchise tag on running back Ray Rice. If that happens, the team may move tackle Jah Reid to guard with Adams certainly being an attractive option as a replacement.
Adams has the size that the Ravens prefer as well as the talent to stop defenders. If they don't go for a linebacker (I like Vontaze Burfict) to learn under and ultimately replace Ray Lewis when it's time for him to retire, Adams or another offensive tackle will be their first round choice.
