Mel Kiper Jr 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Breaking Down the Worst of Mel's Mock
Mel Kiper Jr., the resident ESPN NFL draft expert, has released his Mock Draft 2.0, and he misses big with some of his crazy picks.
Of course teams are going do whatever they see fit, but in Kiper's mock, some teams have better options but end up with sloppy picks.
Kiper makes some bold and brash picks, and while some could potentially work out for the best, others will end horribly, which is exactly why teams should steer clear from Kiper's picks.
With that said, here's a breakdown of Kiper's worst draft choices.
Dallas Cowboys select S, Mark Barron
The top safety in the class of 2012 hails from the BCS National Champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide. However, at No. 14, Barron is a huge reach, and one that the Cowboys would certainly regret.
Dallas does need to upgrade the secondary, but it could also use help at the linebacker position as well. In Kiper's draft, the top linebackers are gone, so he is smart to think the Cowboys will look to the secondary.
However, selecting one of the top cornerbacks is the best decision for the Cowboys here, as picking up Barron is too risky.
Sure, he's the best safety, but that's too high of a pick for him, especially when his former teammate Dre Kirkpatrick is still on the board, as well as Janoris Jenkins, Alfonzo Dennard and Stephon Gilmore.
San Francisco 49ers select WR, Rueben Randle
This is probably the worst pick Kiper makes in his Mock 2.0. Randle is a skilled wide receiver, but he isn't worthy of a first-round pick.
Besides Randle making into the first round, the fact Kiper picks him for the 49ers over Alshon Jeffery is downright insane.
Both wideouts are 6'4", but Jeffery has the bigger frame and the better hands. Kiper either has bias toward Jeffery or is nuts because the former South Carolina Gamecock is going to be a first-round pick.
Kiper is right to have the 49ers draft a wide receiver, but choosing Randle over Jeffery is a terrible decision and one that San Francisco will regret in a major way if they actually make this move.
New York Giants select TE, Dwayne Allen
The Giants don't have a major need for a tight end, but I do think they will draft one later in the draft for added depth.
Using the first round pick on a tight end would be a very wrong move for New York. Plus, Allen isn't the surefire top tight end in the 2012 draft class. Orson Charles definitely gives him a run for his money, and I think Charles is better overall anyway.
New York's best bet is to focus on adding a strong linebacker to the defense, as it is an area of great need.
Offensive line wouldn't be a bad option either, but with Dont'a Hightower and Zach Brown still available, the Giants would be foolish to pass on a linebacker by picking a tight end instead.
