Matt Millen Should Be Exiled from Football!

Keith SheltonJan 5, 2009

I received a bit of somewhat shocking news this morning. Matt Millen will be doing color commentary for the Super Bowl this year.

I re-read the line in my Tuesday paper several times to make sure I saw correctly, then I slapped myself across the face, in case I was having some horrible nightmare.

Nope. Matt Millen...commentating for the Super Bowl.

Erik Diana, a Bleacher Report writer has previously commented on the audacity of Matt Millen being allowed on NBC; however, I feel the need to take this a step further.

Before I get into the ridiculousness of this predicament, I'm going to venture a guess that there is not a single Lions fan out there that wants to see Matt Millen's face on a TV screen ever again.

Matt Millen is the face of 0-16. He was the brains (or lack thereof) of the Detroit Lions for eight seasons. He masterminded putting together the drafts that included Joey Harrington, Mike Williams, and Charles Rogers.

In one season, he turned the Lions from a respectable 8-8 to 2-14 and they haven't recovered since. In eight seasons with the team, Millen couldn't even pull out a .250 win percentage. That's absolutely beyond pathetic.

To make matters even worse, Millen was afraid of the media. He spent his time during the week in Philadelphia, far away from the Detroit media, the team, and fans. On the day he was fired, he ducked the media again and instead let his coach answer the tough questions.

The very fact that Matt Millen is allowed to do commentary again on NBC makes the veins in my head pulse and makes my hair stand on end. The idea that he should be allowed to commentate for the Superbowl exceeds the realm of the ridiculous and goes straight into negligence.

We aren't supposed to reward incompetence. Matt Millen is the most incompetent GM in sports history, and for his actions he is rewarded with the honor of commentating for the Super Bowl.

How irresponsible is NBC for allowing this farce? They lose all credibility in my eyes. Truthfully, the station was already getting on my nerves by packing in every football analyst under the sun. Four people arguing over a play is borderline too much. NBC has recently had six commentators at one time breaking down a game. It makes your head spin.

There was absolutely no need to bring Matt Millen, of all people, on board.

Unless Millen is going to get some kind of special segment like "how to lose this football game," he is probably the least credible person associated with the NFL to be analyzing football.

This man should be exiled from football, not commentating the Super Bowl! Isn't there some overzealous judge somewhere that can block this from happening?

Yes, Matt Millen delivered some kind of halfhearted apology the other day, and no, I don't care. He can apologize all damn day long if he wants to. It doesn't make any difference to a Lions fan.

This is one Super Bowl I'll either be watching on mute, or won't be watching at all. I'd like for NBC to get their ratings in and see a black hole in Detroit. Millions of TV sets turned on some other channel. Think that'd send them a message? We don't want to see Millen talking about football NBC. Get that through your heads!
