Derrick Rose's Desired Deal for Pau Gasol Will Never Happen

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

The Lakers would be nuts to trade Pau Gasol for Carlos Boozer. Apparently, Derrick Rose has expressed a desire for the Bulls to trade Boozer to the Lakers for Gasol. I thought it was a joke at first, but apparently there is truth to the rumor. Per Chris Sheridan:

"

Derrick Rose has let it be known to Bulls management that we wants to play with Pau Gasol if Chicago is able to swing a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers for the veteran power forward from Spain, a source close to Rose told SheridanHoops.com on Sunday.

Rose has given his blessing for the Bulls to go after Gasol with a package that would be centered around Carlos Boozer and another player.

I'm not sure if Derrick Rose was playing NBA 2K12 when he hashed this idea, but that is about the only environment where that trade would be accepted.

It is ridiculous, really.

If Rose, who normally doesn't speak about such things, is going to start voicing his opinion about player personnel, he could have picked a more plausible scenario.

Now this rumor could potentially damage team chemistry. All for a scenario that simply isn't even realistic.

I'm not turning on D-Rose by any stretch, and it's possible this was something he just mentioned to the wrong person, but nonetheless, it's out there now.

The Lakers would never take Boozer's deal in return for Gasol. The two players are close in age: Boozer is 30, Gasol is 31. The Lakers are generally interested in getting younger; that wouldn't be accomplished by adding Boozer.

Also, the contracts are somewhat similar. Boozer has three years and $48 million remaining on his deal, while Gasol has two years and $36 million remaining on his. The Lakers would gain about $4 million per year, but it wouldn't be worth it.

Frankly speaking, Gasol is a better player than Boozer. Making a trade for an inferior player of similar age and contract status is Chisora (my new term for irrational and senseless behavior).

There is no way the Lakers do that deal.

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak has said the Lakers won't make any moves at all, which is quite possible. Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated quoted Kupchak when speaking about the possibility of any Lakers deals:

"

"Of course we'll talk to a lot of teams [about trades], like everybody else does, leading up until the trade deadline to see if there is a way to improve the team," Kupchak said. "But the likelihood is that this is the team that's going to finish into the playoffs. That's just the way it normally works, but we'll see."

"

From a Bulls' standpoint, it would be awesome. The team would receive a better player in nearly every aspect of the game, who is signed for more money and fewer years. Even though they would likely have to part with CJ Watson, it would make the Bulls better instantly.

It would truly make the Bulls the clear Eastern Conference favorites, but that is generally the case when speculating one-sided deals.

Bulls fans shouldn't spend a lot of time fantasizing about the possibilities of a Rose, Richard Hamilton, Luol Deng, Gasol and Joakim Noah lineup.

If you really need to see that team on the floor, turn on your XBOX 360 or PS3; apparently, that is what D-Rose did.
