Espanyol’s Carlos Kameni Attacks a Fan at Training

Espanyol’s Cameroon international goalie, Carlos Kameni, found himself in hot water on Monday after grabbing a bystander at training who was heckling the custodian to not bother to renew his contract with the club.

The 24-year-old, whose contract with Espanyol expires at the end of the season, grabbed the fan by the scruff of the neck before teammates pulled him away. However the incident did not manage to go unnoticed, with one quick-fire photographer getting the all important snap.

So why was Kameni so easily riled?

The fans’ anger towards their number one has been as a result of recent errors in games with Athletic Bilbao and Racing Santander (first goal on the video) with have directly resulted in their side conceding goals. With these blunders fresh in their minds, and also seemingly Karemi’s, the keeper lost his cool far too easily with reports from the scene claiming the Cameroonian responded by shouting “I’m a professional. You should respect my work, respect me.”

Kameni did not speak to reporters afterwards but Espanyol defender Sergio Sanchez defended his teammate admitting the whole squad were feeling the pressure of being 18th in the standings: “I would have probably done the same,” he said. (Sanchez’s interview, in Spanish, can be seen here.)

The upshot will likely see news reports surfacing in the next few days linking the keeper with a move away from Barcelona, with Spurs and Fulham previously both having been mooted as being interested in bringing Kameni to London.
