David Haye Must Press Charges in Wake of Dereck Chisora Brawl

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

So maybe boxers really are crazy after all.

After Dereck Chisora lost his title bout against Vitali Klitschko Saturday night, he decided to pick on a different guy. For whatever reason, he decided to start a brawl with former WBA champion David Haye at a post-fight press conference.

A smashed beer bottle and a death threat later, and the German police ended up detaining Chisora for almost seven hours before releasing him. The police haven’t been able to track down Hayes, but he has nothing to hide from according to a police spokesman (per Daily Mail):

"

It's not a charge against David Haye. We have to report everything what happened last night between (Chisora and Haye). Maybe he (Haye) has gone home, yes. Then maybe we would talk to our colleagues in Great Britain.

"

Sometimes one must wonder if a highly publicized boxing match is more of a WWE event in the weeks leading up to the fight, but Saturday night showed us something never seen before.

The proverbial line has been crossed, especially when reading about what Chisora was yelling at Haye (per Associated Press): "I swear to God, David, I am going to shoot you. I am going to shoot you. I am going to physically shoot David Haye."

There needs to be a swift reaction by Haye and his legal team to ensure the hot-headed Chisora never does something like this again.

Should he lose his boxing license? No, he shouldn’t lose his entire career over the orrdeal. Would you not retaliate, especially when you fight for a living? I know Haye fought back and is certainly no saint in the situation with the potential glassing, but his antics weren’t even close to what Chisora pulled.

Chisora acted like a maniac the entire weekend. He slapped Klitschko in the face at Friday’s pre-fight weigh-in and spat in the face of his brother Wladimir while they were introducing his brother on Saturday.

This goes beyond just trying to bait somebody into a future bout; this is a criminal matter. What if the shards of glass would have gotten into Haye’s eye? What if he really is serious about trying to kill him?

Chisora’s volatile antics can’t be taken lightly.

It’s a dark day for boxing, which is exactly what the sport didn’t need after fans were denied (again) a Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather fight. Chisora needs to realize he can't act like some sort of street hooligan when he made it this far in the boxing world and deserves to get charged with assault.

Making him go through the court system and maybe even giving him a month or so of jail time should make Chisora realize that he isn’t above the sport or the law.

This is such an awful way to end a great weekend of boxing in the ring. We should be celebrating Klitschko's performance, but instead he is a complete afterthought because of the decisions Chisora decided to make.
