Jeff Gordon Video: Crash Leaves Prolific Racer Upside Down at Bud Shootout 2012
The 2012 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona was marked by multiple crashes, Kevin Harvick's car catching fire and, as seen above, Jeff Gordon's car flipping on its back with only two laps to go in the race.
That's one way to get 2012 started.
Gordon described the crash as follows (from Tom Jenson of FOXNews):
"“Every time I got to Kyle [Busch's] bumper, he just started getting so sideways, like he was a lot tonight,” Gordon said. “And I thought he was going to wreck. I saw him start to spin, so I went wide, not knowing someone had gotten to my outside. That got me into those guys and into the wall and along for a ride. And then Kyle wins the race, so it was a pretty wild and crazy way to get it all started. It was certainly an exciting finish, but not the way our Drive To End Hunger Chevrolet wants to get the 2012 season started.”
"
Gordon's swerve took him directly into the car of Kurt Busch. Thankfully, Gordon did not sustain any serious injuries from the wreck.
I can't imagine sliding in a car, upside down, across a track like Gordon did. Sitting in that car, upside down, waiting for someone to assist you must be horrifying.
In the video, Michael Waltrip talks about wanting to escape an upside-down car as quickly as possible as it smokes and fuel and oil drip toward the ground. At that moment, it must feel like being inside of a motorized coffin.
These videos make me glad I'm a writer.
