Manchester City Summer Transfer Targets: 8 Biggest Names Linked to Blues so Far

Manchester City have gotten linked to bigger and bigger names each season since their massive financial overhaul and roster purge.

With only a few players remaining of the squad that started out at the beginning of the clubs new ownership, there are still more moves likely to come.

Some of the biggest rumors in the league right now all find their way through the Etihad Stadium.

Jan Vertonghen

Belgian international defender and Ajax Amsterdam captain Jan Vertonghen was linked with Manchester City just last week by the Manchester Evening News.

He has also been linked with a host of other English Premiership clubs as well as to AS Roma.

Daniele De Rossi

Italian side AS Roma's vice-captain Daniele De Rossi was linked to Manchester City for much of the last six months and was again linked to them this January.

However, the midfield enforcer has recently signed a new long term deal with Roma and will be staying in the Eternal City as reported by ESPN.

Edinson Cavani

ESPNsoccernet.com are one of many news outlets to claim that Manchester City are to chase the signature of Uruguayan international and Serie A side Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.

The lanky front man was part of the Napoli side that embarrassed Chelsea in Italy during the UEFA Champions League this past week, and he will be a big target for many top clubs in the coming months.

Ezequiel Lavezzi

Crunchsports has linked the Manchester side with another Napoli star in forward Ezequiel Lavezzi.

With a brace against Chelsea in his last match for the first two Champions League goals of his career it looks like the sky is currently the limit for the player.

Gonzalo Higuain

Real Madrid's Argentine sensation Gonzalo Higuain has been linked with a summer move to the Sky Blues this summer by the Guardian.

However, the claims that Sergio Aguero could be used to sweeten the deal makes it seem like nothing but a rumor.

Robin Van Persie

Arsenal skipper and star striker Robin Van Persie has been linked with Manchester City for the last several months.

Despite the poor form that Arsenal have been facing throughout the season, it is said that he will not be sold this summer according to reports from NESN.

If the Gunner's have any hope of rebuilding their side, they have to hold onto the Dutchman and keep deep-pocket clubs like Manchester City at bay.

Eden Hazard

The Daily Mirror linked Eden Hazard with a possible Manchester City move at the beginning of the month of February.

However, Hazard has since made it almost clear that he will be joining Tottenham over the summer. Harry Redknapp will have made a huge steal in the market if he pulls it off.

Nicolas Gaitan

Manchester United seemed to be the biggest chasers of Nicolas Gaitan, but in the last week or so, Manchester City have announced that they are entering the bidding war.

FOXSports.com claim that City are in the midst of making arrangements to offer £35 million to Benfica for his services.

Conclusion

Manchester City will more than likely be active come the summer window than they were in January.

However, the Financial Fair Play rules could eliminate much of that from all leagues.
