Peyton Manning Rumors: Texans Would Be Idiodic to Sign Washed Up Superstar

Andrew KulhaJun 4, 2018

The dumbest thing the Houston Texans could do in their quest to win the Super Bowl is sign Peyton Manning, who is on a crash course towards NFL free agency.

Dumb may be too light of a word to describe that potential decision. It would be an idiotic signing, bordering on lunacy.

We're not even sure Manning can correctly throw a football right now let alone do it at a high level. Let's not even get started about the chances of him playing at a Super Bowl level.

This would be a horrible idea all around for a team that is easily just a few pieces away from making a Super Bowl run.

Nonetheless, Bob Allen of KTRK News in Houston is reporting that at least one of the parties that would be involved in a potential signing is interested:

"

Someone I know who is close friends with the Manning family says Peyton is definitely interested in coming to the Texans. Manning will be released by the Colts early next month and will be a free agent. The person who knows the Mannings says Peyton wants to play on a team that has a chance of going to a Super Bowl, and the Texans fit that description.

Another big plus is that the Texans are in the same division as the Colts. Manning not only knows the division, but I'm told the relationship between he and Colts owner Jim Irsay now is strictly business. And don't underplay the competitiveness between Peyton and Eli -- it does matter that Eli has two Super Bowl rings to Peyton's one.

"

I don't care how close Allen's source is to the Mannings, the ideology behind this signing is completely flawed.

Yes, the Texans are a borderline Super Bowl team and yes Manning may be able to provide some knowledge on the division rival Colts, but the advantage that would bring is minuscule compared to the risk the Texans would be taking on a quarterback coming off a year away from the game because of multiple next surgeries and now nerve damage in his arm.

It would be an absolute ludicrous and highly irresponsible signing by the Texans.

Sure, with Arian Foster and the running game leading the offense and a very strong defense to back him up, would Manning have to play like the superstar he used to be?

Not even close.

That being said, you can get that same exact production out of T.J. Yates, who was actually more than serviceable in relief of Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart.

That point doesn't even matter though because for all intents and purposes it looks like Schaub is healing fine, and he still has what it takes to be a top quarterback in the NFL.

If he doesn't recover well, he's in the last year of his contract and the Texans can move on. It's as easy as that.

There's no reason to complicate the situation, and I don't see how it makes any sense to involve Manning.

Not only would it stir a huge controversy, but the Texans would be using valuable money that they absolutely need in free agency.

Let's accept the facts. Manning is washed up, and even if he's not completely done now, he's much nearer to the end than he is to a career comeback.

The Texans need to stay away.
