Manny Pacquiao Meeting with Jeremy Lin Would Give Mayweather Another Black Eye
As the top two boxers in the world, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have legions of fans.
But they also have legions of haters.
And Mayweather picked up quite a few haters in the last week.
Mayweather tweeted on Monday:
"Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he's Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise.
"
Mayweather's tweet about America's new NBA sensation drew loads of criticism, some even calling him racist.
Pacquiao apparently feels differently about Lin than Mayweather. In fact, Pac-Man reportedly wants to meet with Lin on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden when the New York Knicks host the Atlanta Hawks.
It would be a public relations dream for Pacquiao and a PR nightmare for Mayweather.
Pacquiao and Mayweather have been in a PR battle of sorts as the world pressures them into a megafight and both camps fail to give the world what it wants. Everybody seems to have an opinion on who's to blame for nothing coming to fruition yet. Some blame Pacquiao. Some blame Mayweather. And some blame the both of them.
But Pacquiao can boost his PR in his meeting with Lin. Lin, like Pacquiao, is one of the most celebrated Asian athletes right now. Pacquiao is a legendary boxer. Lin has led the Knicks to seven straight victories as an undrafted point guard out of Harvard. The world is certainly watching both of them.
That's why Pacquiao's support of Lin makes Mayweather look like a fool. When Mayweather reduced Lin's hype to his Asian heritage, he opened up a can of worms he never should have. He is being blasted left and right, in the basketball world and boxing world.
I'm sure Pacquiao isn't meeting with Lin just to drum up his reputation. But it certainly doesn't hurt.
If I was Mayweather, I'd think about backing off his stance. People love Jeremy Lin and they're going to love Manny Pacquiao for supporting him.
