2012 NFL Draft: What Will the St. Louis Rams Do with No. 2 Pick?
We all know Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck will be taken with the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft. The Indianapolis Colts hold that selection and will almost certainly use it on the young signal-caller. Therefore, the intrigue surrounding this year's draft starts at the No. 2 pick, where the St. Louis Rams could go in a number of directions.
St. Louis has plenty of needs after an awful 2-14 season, but the team's biggest problems are definitely on the offensive side of the ball. Franchise quarterback Sam Bradford was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2010 draft and won the NFL's Rookie of the Year award that season. Much was expected of him in 2011, but he only played in 10 games thanks to injuries and his numbers did not show progress.
Bradford needs help on offense, especially up front and on the outside.
The Rams made Jason Smith the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft and hoped that he would develop into a franchise cornerstone at left tackle. However, that hasn't happened. Rumors now suggest the team may cut him to avoid paying the $10 million base salary he will be due in 2012.
While St. Louis has moved 2010 second-round pick Rodger Saffold to left tackle and appear to be happy with that move, USC's Matt Kalil is the second best player in this year's draft. What's more, he will be available when the Rams pick. Kalil is a franchise left tackle and is the can't-miss prospect that Smith wasn't.
Another option for St. Louis would be Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon. Blackmon is far and away the best wideout in this class, and the Rams could grab him in hopes of creating a pass-catch combination similar to what Detroit has with Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Bradford needs a go-to weapon in the passing game and Blackmon would make a whole lot of sense.
The third potential choice for St. Louis would be to trade down and stockpile picks to assist in filling out a roster that clearly needs some help. Several teams like Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III and might be willing to move up to ensure the opportunity to land him.
Moving down a few spots and getting some extra picks might actually be St. Louis' best option, since Blackmon might be around a few spots later. If the Rams could trade down, grab extra picks and still end up with Blackmon, it would be a huge coup.
