NHL Trade Deadline: Do the New Jersey Devils Really Need to Deal?

Phil DeHavenFeb 22, 2008

The New Jersey Devils are at the center of a multitide of trade rumors on the eve of Tuesday's deadline.

Some of them include players such as Robert Lang, Matts Sundin, Dan Boyle, Brad Richards, and Rob Blake.

But my question to Lou Lamorello:

Who can you afford to give up?

This year's team has shown lots of talent from younger stars that have stepped up, such as the already proven Zach Parise, Rookie David Clarkson, and Sophmore Travis Zajac.

I'm not suprized Clarkson has been one of the most popular players on the Devils roster.

He offers a well-rounded package to any team willing to trade for his physical, yet skillfull, style of play. He has show that he can score but isn't afraid to drop the gloves to help his team out if necessary.

Teams are very interested in Clarkson and Zajac, but I would find it hard to believe that Parise would be delt away.

Two players who should be delt away are Mike Rupp and Arron Asham.

Sure Asham scored twice against Ottowa, but where is the consistency?

Rupp is way past his time; the Devils only have a spot for him because he is a fighter and Nicholas Bergfors isn't ready to come up from the AHL yet.

So as we push foward to Tuesday's deadline I leave all you Devils fans with one last question?

Is it worth it to give up your future just to try and win the Stanley Cup for one year with a "RENTAL" player you aquired in a trade?

I don't have that answer for you, but I guess by the time Tuesday rolls around we shall all know the answer.
