NBA Trade Rumors: Ramon Sessions Perfect Fit for Lakers

Michael DixonJun 2, 2018

When you look at some of the potentially available point guards for the Lakers to acquire, the one that keeps looming as the best overall name is Ramon Sessions

As was reported through Dave McMenamin of ESPN Los Angeles, ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard said that the Lakers would be interested.

"

The Lakers have also considered making a trade for Cleveland guard Ramon Sessions and Houston guard Jonny Flynn.

This was a similar report to the one done by Tom Reed of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, who also detailed what the Lakers might have for the Cavaliers.

"

They have their first-round selection and a top-20 protected pick from Dallas that could be of interest to the rebuilding Cavs.

"

While Flynn would make the team younger, the Lakers can't possibly want to see a player that averages fewer than 12 minutes a game coming to the team and depending on him in crunch time. Going against the likes of Chris Paul or Russell Westbrook in the Western Conference playoffs would be an overwhelming situation.

Sessions on the other hand has been a spark plug for the Cavaliers. Not only is he younger than Derek Fisher, but he is objectively a better player. Look at the numbers for all the proof you will ever need.

 Age   MPG  PPG  APG  SPG
Derek Fisher   3725.75.13.71.0
Ramon Sessions   2524.810.15.70.5

It seems pretty clear that the advantage lies with Sessions. But what if you're a person who dreams big? What if you want to see someone like Deron Williams or Rajon Rondo go to Los Angeles? That's fine, I get that. But take another look at what Reed said to figure out why Sessions is the better option.

He didn't talk about anything other than a draft pick. I can guarantee you that someone like Williams or Rondo would end up costing the Lakers Andrew Bynum or Pau Gasol. To get talent, you have to give a lot of it up.

In Sessions, you have a nice compromise. He is a much better and younger player than the one currently manning the point for the Lakers and by any account, wouldn't cost the Lakers anything more than a draft pick, which are always gambles.

The best deal that the Lakers could possibly make involves Sessions, and they have to pull the trigger on this. Simply put, this is not a championship team if Derek Fisher is the point guard.

They won't win a playoff series against the likes of Westbrook, Paul or Tony Parker. Those guards would have a field day with Fisher, just like J.J. Barea did last year.

Sessions would give them a little new life. He clearly knows how to play the game while logging significant minutes. He wouldn't be overwhelmed by the situation.

This is the best move the Lakers could possibly make. It would fill a need and wouldn't open up any new weaknesses.
