Klitschko vs Chisora: Weakness of Heavyweight Division Will Be on Full Display

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

In boxing these days, there are the Klitschko brothers, and then, there is everybody else.

Dereck Chisora, coming off a controversial loss against Robert Helenius in Helsinki, is the next challenger to face up with the 40-year-old Vitali Klitschko, the No. 2 heavyweight in the world.

But this will end as so many of the heavyweight fights have: with a Klitschko victory.

Chisora does have something going for him. For one, he's 28 years old and definitely appears determined to make his mark on the boxing world, even if he's lost two of his last three fights. Secondly, he should have won the fight against Helenius in my opinion. He was robbed in Helenius' native Finland.

Third, Chisora is undoubtedly a fearless fighter. When you're as overmatched as Chisora is, fearlessness is really your only way of surprising a guy like Klitschko.

But in the end, Chisora will be Klitschko's 11th straight victim, and it's starting to get really old.

Klitschko hasn't had a worthy opponent since Lennox Lewis in June 2003, his last loss. While Chisora looked good against Helenius, Klitschko will make you pay if you lunge or come inside carelessly. Helenius didn't do this.

There is always the possibility of a big punch landing for Chisora, but despite being 40 years old, Klitschko still has a very good chin. It's going to take more than one punch to down him.

I feel like in this day and age, people are trying to find some way, any way, that a challenger can beat one of the Klitschkos. In reality, there is no one even close, even with Vitali aging.

The days of challengers actually having a shot at the elite fighters of the sport are long gone. I want to believe that Chisora will be that boxer who comes out of nowhere and shakes up the boxing world, but I can't realistically see it happening.

Chisora comes into this fight with a lot spirit, but the spirit of the heavyweight division being filled with dynamic fighters has come and gone.
