Klitschko vs. Chisora: Keys to Brit Pulling off Massive Upset
Dereck Chisora will be the new heavyweight champ if he can remember and execute the three following keys in his fight against Vitali Klitschko.
This will be much easier said than done, but it is certainly not impossible. Chisora is a huge underdog in this fight. Bovada has Klitschko listed as a minus-1,400 favorite.
To defeat these long odds, here is what Chisora must do.
Get Inside
Klitschko is going to want to keep the challenger away from him. At a distance, the overwhelming advantage goes to the champ. At 6'7", Klitschko has a reach of 80". Chisora, who stands 6'2", has a reach of 72".
If he wants to hurt Klitschko, he is gong to have to do it at close range. He will have to use his strengths to do this.
Chisora is an agile fighter with quick hands. He will have to use his movement to avoid Vitali's jabs, move inside with good handwork and pummel him with those quick hands.
Avoid Vitali's Right
The champ's bread and butter is to wear down opponents with the long reach of his jab. He is accurate and forceful with this jab, and that allows him to set his opponents up for his crushing right hand.
Chisora cannot let Vitali land too many jabs, or he will be just another victim of that right hand.
Again, the challenger will have to use his agility here. He must stay on his toes and remain moving for the entire fight. He can't present an easy target for the champ, or he will find himself on his back.
Extend the Fight
Chisora has predicted an eight-round KO. But he would be a fool to go for this. Going for the knockout blow will only set him up to be leveled into unconsciousness.
Instead, he needs to do everything he can to extend this fight. The longer the bout goes and the more he can make Vitali work, the bigger advantage he will have.
Klitschko is the second-oldest champ in heavyweight history at 40. Stamina is not going to be this massive man's strength.
Once again, Chisora must utilize his advantage of mobility. He needs to bob and weave, stick and move to not present an easy target or have this fight turn into a slugfest.
When Vitali becomes tired, it will be Chisora's best hope to do some damage.
