20 Worst Goalie-Mask Designs in NHL History

Nicholas GossFeb 15, 2012

Some NHL goalies create amazingly creative designs for their masks that are quite impressive, but other netminders have some really boring masks that lack original designs.

Some goalies take the task of making a unique mask more seriously than others, and those who do really open themselves up to having more fans.

Sadly, some goalies either don't care what their mask looks like or they are just bad at creating cool ones, so let's look at 20 of the worst goalie masks ever.

Evgeni Nabokov

1 of 20

I live the bottom of this mask from former San Jose Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov, but the main part of the design is absolutely horrid.

John Vanbiesbrouck

John Vanbiesbrouck was a solid goaltender for multiple teams, including the Florida Panthers and Philadelphia Flyers, but this mask is awful. Not much to say.

Martin Biron

The lumberjack man is not a good design for a Philadelphia Flyers mask. Martin Biron can do a lot better.

Carey Price

Carey Price is a tremendous goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens, but this mask honoring Jacques Plante is pretty weak.

Dominik Hasek

Dominik Hasek's mask for the Detroit Red Wings is a little better than Chris Osgood's but it still lacks some real flare and creativity.

Kelly Hrudey

Kelly Hrudey's mask for the Los Angeles Kings was really bad, but then again, the black, gray and white color design of the old Los Angeles Kings' uniform really didn't give him much to work with.

Rick DiPietro

7 of 20

Rick DiPietro has had little success in his career, and he's had similar luck in designing goalie masks. I'm all for being patriotic, but this design is bad.

Martin Brodeur

8 of 20

Martin Brodeur is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and one of the best goalies ever. His masks, however, including the one pictured here, are not very good.

Mike Smith

I haven't seen what Mike Smith's current Phoenix Coyotes masks look like, but hopefully they are better than his old Tampa Bay Lightning ones.

Jamie McLennan

Whether you are a fan of Nickelback or not, these mask designs from Jamie McLennan are terrible.

Doug Favell

11 of 20

Doug Favell's old-time mask for the Toronto Maple Leafs was pretty bad, even if mask designs were not as advanced back when he played. A better drawing of the Leafs logo would have helped.

Nikolai Khabibulin

12 of 20

Nikolai Khabibulin did not bring Stanley Cup success to the Chicago Blackhawks after winning it with Tampa Bay, and his masks were also not very successful.

Tim Thomas

13 of 20

Boston Bruins star goaltender Tim Thomas has terrible mask designs. There's little color and the design is really lacking some creativity and flair.

Kari Lehtonen

14 of 20

I don't know what Kari Lehtonen was thinking with this mask, but it's just a brutal design.

Jonas Hiller

15 of 20

I'm not sure where Jonas Hiller of the Anaheim Ducks used this mask, but the one-color format is one to be abandoned forever.

Chris Osgood

16 of 20

Chris Osgood was a fantastic goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings, but this mask design is about as boring and plain as it gets.

Dan Cloutier

17 of 20

Dan Cloutier could have done so much more with the Vancouver Canucks' color scheme and logo than what he had in the picture shown here.

Dany Sabourin

18 of 20

Dany Sabourin could have done so much more with the Pittsburgh Penguins logo, but this animal looks way too happy. It needs a more intimidating look.

Chris Mason

19 of 20

Chris Mason didn't have too much to work with on the Atlanta Thrashers, but this design is absolutely brutal.

Marc-Andre Fleury

Marc-Andre Fleury appears to have an igloo on the back of his mask, but regardless of what it actually is, it's pretty ugly.
