NFL Draft 2012: Examining the Teams That Could Likely Trade Up in Round 1

Chris TrapassoFeb 15, 2012

Robert Griffin III is the guy who all quarterback-needy NFL clubs want after Stanford signal-caller Andrew Luck goes No. 1 overall to the Indianapolis Colts.

He's so desired, in fact, that I expect at least two teams to attempt to move up to draft him.

The St. Louis Rams hold the second pick, but have $78 million man Sam Bradford under center. Therefore, they aren't in the market for RG3.

After an atrocious 2011 season and with new head coach Jeff Fisher now at the helm, they'd love to acquire more picks to begin somewhat of a rebuilding process.

Let's take a look at three possible teams that could trade up to grab the highly-touted quarterback.

Washington Redskins

There isn't a team and owner more aggressive during the offseason than the Washington Redskins and Daniel Snyder.

With the New York Giants capturing another Super Bowl title, and two immensely-talented clubs in the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys in their division, the Redskins need to acquire players that will bring them up to the rest of the NFC East's caliber.

No guy could elevate them to new heights faster than Griffin III.

He has transcendent quarterback ability, and recently we've seen young quarterbacks flourish early in their careers.

The moment the Rams go on the clock on April 29th, expect the Redskins to slap a big-time trade proposal on the table.

They want their franchise quarterback and Griffin III is worth the blockbuster deal.

Seattle Seahawks

A lot of the same goes for the Seahawks. Historically, they haven't been as aggressive in the offseason or on draft day, but head coach Pete Carrol fully understands the importance of a top-tier quarterback after his tenure as USC's head coach.

Seattle was surprisingly competitive in 2011, but their one glaring hole was at quarterback.

Sorry, Tarvaris Jackson.

Charlie Whitehurst clearly isn't the answer, either.

There's a distinct possibility that they could look to trade up into the Rams' No. 2 spot or Minnesota Vikings' No. 3 spot if Griffin III is still available.

Cleveland Browns

Many people are counting the Browns out as a team that could be looking to trade up. They have the No. 4 overall pick, and would at most only need to move up two spots to grab Griffin if he's at the top of their draft board.

We aren't sure what the future holds for Colt McCoy or if they'll aggressively go after a free agent quarterback like Matt Flynn. However, you better believe team president Mike Holmgren will take a long and hard look at the Heisman Trophy winner.

Moving into the No. 2 spot wouldn't cost Cleveland a ton of draft picks. As a result, it would allow them to add weapons for Griffin III and bring in defensive players with the remainder of their selections.
