NBA Trade Rumors: Can the Hawks Acquire Steve Nash from the Phoenix Suns?

Karthik TadisinaFeb 14, 2012

One of the truest professionals in the NBA today is point guard Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns.

Nash is currently in the last year of his contract and still would like to finish out the season in Phoenix.

However, the Suns may have to make the decision to trade their fan favorite in the front office.

Nash is a player that can possibly be had at the trade deadline. Currently in his 16th NBA season, Nash has had an amazing basketball career that has gotten better over time. Nash started his career in Phoenix, which drafted him in the 1996 NBA draft.

He spent the first two seasons in Phoenix before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks. Nash spent seven seasons with the Mavericks before returning to Phoenix as a free agent in the summer of 2004.

After returning to Phoenix for his second stint with the team, Nash won back-to-back MVPs, joining a historic list while playing alongside the likes of Joe Johnson, Shawn Marion, Amar’e Stoudemire and Shaquille O’Neal—who have all also moved to different teams.

With the Suns in a rebuilding mode, could Nash find himself playing somewhere else come March 16th?

One team that is need of a major piece to give themselves a chance to get over the hump is the Atlanta Hawks, a team that has made relatively quick exits in the postseason.

Imagine the Hawks with Steve Nash running the show and playing alongside the likes of Joe Johnson, Tracy McGrady and, possibly, Al Horford—if he returns from a pectoral injury.

In order to acquire Nash from Phoenix, the Hawks may have to part with an asset like Josh Smith, who the Suns may ask for rather than Joe Johnson, along with an expiring contract such as Kirk Hinrich.

The Suns could send Nash and maybe another player like Channing Frye, who is a good shooter. This would give the Hawks another option in the frontcourt.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Nash as the trade deadline approaches.

Stay tuned.
