Mayweather vs Cotto: Junito Doesn't Have Enough Left to Contend with Money
Miguel Cotto got the retribution he deserved when he stopped Antonio Margarito in his last fight; too many wars like the Margartito fight are exactly why he won't beat Floyd Mayweather.
After the second Margarito fight, Cotto looked battered, and physically and emotionally tired. It wasn’t the normal fatigue after a hotly contested and emotional battle. Take a look at the post fight interview:
It was that “end of my career” type of fatigue, and as a fan of Cotto’s, I hate to see him fight on, if that is the case.
There aren’t many nicer, more gentlemanly fighters in the world, and I genuinely root for him in every fight; but this is fight he probably wouldn’t win in his prime, let alone at a war torn 31 years old. Floyd is three years older, and he's been professional five years longer, but he has had only five more fights than Cotto.
Miguel Cotto is 37-2 with 30 KOs, the two losses were brutal defeats at the hands of Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao. He was bloodied and beaten in those bouts, and he was nicked up pretty good in the rematch with Margarito.
Floyd hasn't taken the punishment in his entire career that Cotto took in his two losses.
There are only so many fights like that a fighter can take. I believe Cotto is at his limit. He will need to be a sharp and accurate counter puncher, as he has no chance to match Floyd's speed.
He has never been a good defensive fighter, he’s always been easy to hit. You can expect Floyd to dominate with lightning fast straight right leads. As he gains more confidence (yeah, that’s possible), he will start to throw combinations.
When Floyd throw combos, he gets stoppages. The pot shots are for decision victories. Floyd is a better puncher than people give him credit for. When plants and fires, he can and will stop fighters.
Cotto has so much heart that he won't stop until he absolutely cannot continue. In turn, this fight will likely get bloody for Cotto, and honestly, I will hate to see that.
The payday will be a nice one for Cotto, but I hope it will be his last. He could hang around and still defeat most fighters in the world, but his days as one of the premier fighters in the world are over.
A fighter and man of Cotto’s caliber is above that, and I hope he walks away.
