Roddy White: Falcons Star Picks Wrong Reasons to Slam Roger Goodell
Roddy White is right, Roger Goodell is incredibly overpaid. But while his emotions are right, the Falcons receiver is a little off base in what he's criticizing the commissioner for.
This started with a report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, saying that Commissioner Goodell will make $20 million per season by the time the decade is over.
White is not happy about that number and took to his Twitter page to voice that frustration. He started with this, stating a completely irrelevant fact.

Keeping to that theme, he added this.
Goodell's football-playing prowess is irrelevant. Commissioners in sports are long term, while the vast majority of the players currently in the NFL will not be there by the time the decade ends.
They oversee the entire league and because of that, good commissioners should make $20 million. The problem is that Goodell is not a good commissioner, nor is he even close.
Let's take a look at some of what has happened under Goodell's watch as commissioner and we'll see how much he should be making.
Changing Rules for Player Protection
This certainly has a lot of positives to it, but has also created a much tougher environment to play defense than had ever existed before. Defenders simply don't know what they can and can't do from one season to the next, or even one game to the next.
Protecting the head is fine, but it was never this hard to defend in past years. Here is the only proof you will ever need about how hard it is to defend. Take a look at Drew Brees' regular season numbers and remember that he was the undeniable leader of a 13-3 juggernaut.
| Completions/Attempts | Completion Percentage | Yards | Touchdowns | Interceptions |
| 468/657 | 71.2 | 5,476 | 46 | 14 |
Brees broke the previous single-season yardage record and did so with one full week to spare. Seeing all of that, you would think that he would be the league's MVP, right? You would be wrong. Aaron Rodgers was the league's MVP and was a near unanimous selection.
If the kind of year Brees had is not good enough to win the MVP, it is an easy sign that the offenses are too dominant. If you don't think the changes in rules has a lot to do with that, you're not paying attention.
Talks of Expansion
There are already too many teams in the league. The product is already too watered down, and it could well get worse.
As was reported by ESPN, Goodell said that if a team is going to play in Los Angeles that it will mean two new teams join the league; that can't happen. Expansion would only reduce the number of quality teams in the league. As it stands now, there isn't one complete football team in the NFL. Picking even more talent away from existing rosters will only make this worse.
There are plenty of reasons to slam Goodell. Under his watch, the league has become dramatically different and inconsistent. He does not deserve to be the commissioner at the end of the decade and certainly doesn't deserve $20 million a year.
The fact that he doesn't play the game has nothing to do with it. Players come and go and deserve to make their pile, but can't be on par with those who are consistently running the league. That is an unfair comparison.
No, Goodell is just a bad commissioner. If you're looking for a reason to say that he doesn't deserve $20 million, that is all you need.
