Lakers Rumors: Why Rajon Rondo Is the Best Option for LA

Kevin Van PeltJun 7, 2018

The Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics have been bitter rivals for what seems like forever. The thought of them working together for a trade seems impossible.

However, according to Eric Pincus of hoopsworld.com, a trade between the two teams may be possible after all. When Pincus asked Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak what the team needed to address, his answer was:

"

“Well, if there were a way for us to get a 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard we’d love to do it … but that’s not likely in February. So you look at other alternatives, and see if it’s better than what you have. That’s all.”

Rajon Rondo is the only 25-year-old All-Star point guard in the league right now and according to Pincus, Kupchak is a literal speaker when talking to the media.

This rumor started a few weeks ago but has not gone away. The Celtics have said that they have interest in Pau Gasol which has lit the flame even more.

Gasol is a big asset to the Lakers and his name gets thrown around for trades too many times. Gasol should be a Laker unless something comes up for the right price. That price is Rondo.

Rondo is a true point guard. He looks to find the open man first. That is the perfect player Kobe Bryant wants to be around. Not only does Rondo have what it takes to be a great offensive tool for the Lakers, he also is a great defender. He is second in steals this season and has incredible reach which helps disrupts opposing teams.

Something that the Lakers are missing, besides a point guard, is team speed. The Lakers are last in the league in fast break points averaging 7.5 a game. Rondo is one of the fastest players in the league. He can be a one-man fast break and can create easy baskets by himself.

The flaw that Rondo has is his lack of a jump shot. He has improved his shot since coming into the league, but, it still needs to be worked on. With someone like Bryant on his team, he will not have to worry about shooting the ball as much and can focus on making plays for his teammates.

Rondo is a great talent and is a player that the Lakers should not pass on. If the Celtics are willing to trade Rondo for Gasol, not only are the Lakers getting a great point guard who can be the future of their team, they are also hurting their rival Celtics. This trade is a perfect scenario for the Lakers, and if they want Rondo then they have to make this trade.
