Raptors Promotional Tactics Prove Jeremy Lin Is Already a Megastar
When opposing teams are marketing your ability and popularity over their own players then you know you've become a megastar, which is exactly what Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks is right now.
There aren't many reasons to go watch the Toronto Raptors play, they don't have a legitimate star and they have won only nine games. So in order to get fans more fans than usual to come to the arena Tuesday, the team department focused on the arrival of Lin to the Air Canada Centre.
The Raptors advertised, or "Lin-vertised" the arrival of Lin and the Knicks for Tuesday's game on their website by telling fans, "See 'Lin-sanity' live."
This is a brilliant idea because without Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire in the lineup, there aren't a whole lot of reasons to watch the Knicks, but with Lin dominating the NBA, there is plenty reason to watch the league's latest sensation.
Toronto is 17th in the NBA in attendance per game, although they do have a bigger building than some teams, but highlighting the arrival of Lin is just an amazing strategy to fill the seats.
There's nothing wrong with this move, especially when there aren't many exciting players on your own team to market. Andrea Bargnani is a good player, but he's not someone that I would pay $50 or more to see play.
Lin is the most captivating story in basketball right now and he will help the Knicks climb up the charts in road attendance because everyone will want to see him play while he's performing at a very high level. The Knicks are 11th in road attendance, but could get much higher in the coming weeks thanks to Lin.
The Raptors need people to come to the arena and support the team, so why not promote star players? Even if they are on the visiting team...
