Eric Gordon Injury: Updates on Hornets Star's Knee Injury

Wes ODonnellFeb 14, 2012

The New Orleans Hornets were desperate to receive some form of long-term compensation for Chris Paul.

What they got was Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu and an unprotected first-round pick.

Gordon was the key component of the deal—a fourth-year player with scoring chops and elite potential.

He played all of two games this season before going down with an injured knee. He was expected to be ready to go by late January, but instead he's going to miss another six weeks with arthroscopic knee surgery, according to Marc Spears:

Chalk this up as just another disappointing loss for the league-owned Hornets in 2012.

UPDATE: Tuesday, Feb. 14 - 12 p.m. EST

Gordon's surgery, according ESPN's TrueHoop affiliate Hornets247.com, was completed successfully:

"

The New Orleans Hornets announced today that Eric Gordon underwent successful arthroscopic surgery to clean up his right knee this morning. As anticipated, he will be out approximately six weeks.

"

This is the only good news the Hornets can possibly get from this situation.

Gordon already turned down a four-year extension with the club earlier this year. Although they remain optimistic, he'll be a restricted free agent this summer and the Hornets can match or exceed any offer he receives. The problem, along with his injury, is that it is evident he wants no part of what is going on in New Orleans.

This club has won five basketball games this season. The other players they landed in the trade, Kaman and Aminu, have combined to start just 12 games.

Bleak isn't even the right word to use when describing the future for the Hornets. They've won back-to-back games just once this year, which ironically enough was the very first two games of the year, and their potential star player couldn't find his way to the court with a map and compass.

We'll update more on Gordon's status when more is known.
