NBA Rumors: The Lakers Have Nothing to Lose by Signing Gilbert Arenas
The Los Angeles Lakers should just ink Gilbert Arenas right now and hope they can catch lightning in a bottle.
They have nothing to lose and everything to gain. They also need to make some gains and in a hurry, or this season is going to fall far short of their lofty standards.
This team has a Grand Canyon dwarfing hole at point guard, and their bench scores almost as much from the bench as they do when they are on the court.
Agent Zero presents the opportunity for them to fill both holes.
The Rumors
Adrian Wojnarowski on Yahoo! Sports shared that the Lakers watched Arenas work out.
"In a search to find some scoring for their floundering offense, Los Angeles Lakers officials attended a private workout for guard Gilbert Arenas on Sunday in Southern California, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Two sources familiar with the workout said Arenas moved well and made a positive impression, but there was no sense of how quickly—if at all—the Lakers would pursue signing him to a free-agent contract.
"
Unless Arenas told them he would only sign if they allowed him to carry guns onto the team flights, there is no reason they shouldn't have inked him right then and there.
Why Arenas Makes Sense
This move makes sense because nothing bad can come of it. He isn't going to disrupt a locker room that already has the likes of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Metta World Peace.
The Lakers could sign him, stick him on the bench and let him play when the second unit takes the court.
He isn't going to alter their flow or cohesion because the second unit doesn't have any. They need someone to come in and make things happen.
If Arenas can do that and get his basketball legs back, then they can start working him into the starting point guard position.
If he can't, or becomes a negative factor in any way, they simply cut him and forget he existed. It's as simple as that.
