2012 NFL Draft: 5 Best Landing Spots for Texas A&M Aggies' Ryan Tannehill
Many draft experts have Ryan Tannehill as the number three quarterback in the draft, but he is a very puzzling prospect. You can pan his inexperience under center (only 19 starts at the position), or credit his athleticism and toughness (over 1500 receiving yards with the Aggies).
He missed the Senior Bowl with a broken foot, and may be unable to perform in some drills at the NFL combine while healing from the injury.
His draft stock has been all over the place and could change drastically from now until April, but here are the teams that should be actively pursuing him in the NFL draft.
Seattle Seahawks
1 of 5Number twelve to the Seattle Seahawks seems right in terms of a ceiling for Tannehill to hit. His draft stock certainly shouldn't be any higher, and anything in the top ten may seem like a reach (see Christian Ponder).
That being said, the Seahawks could surely use the help at quarterback. Tavaris Jackson had his best year statistically, but Pete Carroll's defense was the reason they stayed in games. Tannehill provides the leadership that could make the team around him better (like Andy Dalton last season).
He may not be Pete Carroll's dream quarterback (that would be Matt Barkley), but Tannehill would be an instant upgrade.
Miami Dolphins
2 of 5Robert Griffin III would be the Dolphins' dream quarterback, but they may not have the pieces in place to make that happen. Their eighth draft pick won't register in the minds of the Rams with the second pick for Griffin.
This is where Tannehill becomes an option. They could get him with a first or second-round pick, and have him come in and compete for the starting job.
The Dolphins are simply looking for someone to throw to Brandon Marshall many times a game, and Tannehill may be the best bang for their buck.
Cleveland Browns
3 of 5Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace just weren't up for the challenge in Cleveland last season against the brutal defenses of the AFC North. The Browns were 24th in passing offense with 193.1 yards a game, and could use a lot of help on offensive side of the ball.
Cleveland could be in option for Tannehill late in the first round or early in the second, as the Browns have many picks at their expense. They have the 22nd pick that was acquired from the Falcons in the Julio Jones trade last year, so if they miss out on Robert Griffin with their fourth pick, Tannehill could be there late in the first.
Expect the Browns to use their high picks on skill players, and Tannehill could be taken by them in the first or second round.
Washington Redskins
4 of 5Tannehill could be an option for the Redskins with their first-round pick if they choose not to trade up to a higher spot to grab Robert Griffin III.
The Redskins are past due for a new quarterback, and Tannehill could thrive in D.C. Mike Shanahan is historically known for getting the most out of his quarterbacks, so if Tannehill has time to develop it could turn into a promising situation.
He may not thrive immediately in the Redskins' system, but could turn in to the starter quickly.
Denver Broncos
5 of 5The long-shot of the group, the Broncos seem devoted to incumbent Tim Tebow and would only take Tannehill if he fell to day two of the draft. But he would provide insurance if anything were to happen with Tebow, and could learn the position with fellow young players around him.
It may not seem likely, but Tannehill could help push Tebow in training camp to improve his game. They are very similar quarterbacks from an athletic standpoint.
You can go ahead and call Tannehill Mini-Bow.
