NBA Rumors: Jerry West Will Ensure Lakers Make Right Call on Gilbert Arenas

Whether the Lakers decide to sign Gilbert Arenas, it will be the right decision. Jerry West will make sure of this. 

The Lakers are desperate for point guard help and some scoring punch off the bench. This led to team officials attending a workout for Arenas. 

But there was more than just members of the Lakers organization there. Former Laker great and current Golden State Warriors consultant Jerry West was also in attendance.  

The Rumors

Adrian Wojnarowski on Yahoo! Sports reported the news of West's presence.

Besides Kupchak, Golden State Warriors consultant Jerry West attended the workout, too, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

West, who worked with Kupchak when he headed the Lakers’ front office, hadn’t gone to the workout to evaluate Arenas for the Warriors, Golden State sources said.

“He was just watching,” one league source said.

The Warriors would have little interest in Arenas. They need to build towards the future, and their backcourt is the strength of their team. 

This makes the only reasonable conclusion that West was there to lend his expertise to the Lakers. 

Why This Ensures Lakers Will Make the Right Call

West ability as a talent evaluator is second to none. This is the man that built two different Lakers' dynasties, and had the vision to trade Vlade Divac for a raw high schooler named Kobe Bryant. 

He knows what it takes for a player to succeed in the NBA, and will be able to quickly identify whether Arenas still has the explosion it takes to succeed in the NBA. 

The Lakers certainly have shown they have a competent front office, but they are in a recent slump. Their moves this past offseason have not paid off, and a fresh set of eyes will be a great step towards helping their decision-making process on Arenas. 

Time will tell if the Lakers decide to add Arenas, but the fact the West was there means we already know whichever decision they arrive upon will be the right one.
