Lakers Rumors: Gilbert Arenas Is Smartest Option for Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Lakers have to improve their bench if they plan to win it all this season, and right now the most intelligent move they could make is to sign Gilbert Arenas.
Sure, the Lakers have interest in younger guards, but they'd have to make a trade for those players, and that's something they shouldn't do at the moment.
Drastically changing the roster up with a trade would be detrimental to the team, which is why signing a free agent is their best bet.
Adding Arenas is a simple move for the Lakers. Making a trade is far too complex and would most likely result in some team struggles.
Of course, Arenas has had injury problems in the past, which is something Los Angeles is concerned about. However, every player on the court is subject to injury. Bad things happen from time to time, the good teams just know how to deal with it.
Los Angeles needs help at the point guard position, and at this rate, Arenas is better than nothing. He may have just turned 30, but there he still has talent.
According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN Los Angeles, the Lakers brought in Arenas for a workout this past weekend. While they didn't rush to sign him, they did have positive things to say about the point guard.
A source with knowledge told McMenamin that Arenas "looked slimmed down and explosive."
That's definitely good news for the Lakers. It forces them to think harder about signing Arenas as opposed to making a trade for another guard.
The Lakers have to upgrade the bench, and even though Arenas has had a troubled past, he's the smartest pickup Los Angeles can make right now. There's no need to lose players through a trade when the Lakers can just sign a player that will still give them good production.
