NBA Rumors: Allen Iverson Is a Terrible Fit for Los Angeles Lakers

Timothy RappFeb 12, 2012

Allen Iverson to the Los Angeles Lakers? Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant on the same team together? That could actually happen?

Well, according to Stephen A. Smith, it has been talked about in Los Angeles:

"

Allen Iverson, who sources indicated the Lakers had some interest in as long as he was willing to go to the NBA Developmental League for a few weeks first, is not the answer. He's simply not a point guard.

Smith pretty much debunks this rumor as soon as he opens it up: Iverson is not a pure point guard. His style of play and his ego have never really allowed him to be a pass-first player.

I mean, can you imagine Kobe calling out Iverson after a game in which The Answer dominates the ball beyond the design of the offense? Can you imagine the confrontation between those two egos?

And that's well beyond the first hurdle of this rumor. Do you really think Iverson would be willing to play in the NBA Developmental League for a few weeks?

From what I know of Iverson, I would think he would be insulted by that request.

For a moment, let's travel back in time five years. If I said five years in the future, the Lakers would have Kobe, Iverson and Metta World Peace all on the same roster, your mind would have exploded.

Partially because you would have no idea who Metta World Peace was until I explained Ron Artest changed his name, but fully once you imagined those three trying to coexist on the same team.

The Lakers desperately need a pure point guard who won't be tempted to steal some of Kobe's shots in the offense. I love Allen Iverson as a player and always have, but I also know he was his most effective when he was the alpha male of the Philadelphia 76ers offense.

The Lakers already have their alpha male. I just don't see this working.

But I'd love to see the Lakers try. How entertaining would that be?
