Tiger Woods at Pebble Beach Results: Why Tiger Isn't Set for 2012 Dominance

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

Finishing three strokes over par on Sunday of a golf tournament spells doom.

This isn’t the Tiger Woods of years ago. Shoot, this might not even be the Woods of 2010.

Tiger had the opportunity to win his first official tournament in over two years at the AT&T National Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but fell apart on Sunday.

Just four strokes back, the old Tiger would have been able to make up the deficit in the span of the first four holes. Instead, three straight bogeys on the front nine, and it was all but over for Tiger.

To pour some serious salt into his wounds, his playing partner was Phil Mickleson, who ended up winning the event with an eight-under on the day to finish 16 strokes under par.

Woods's putting was sub-par, but it was clear that mentally, Woods was a mess. Mickelson looked unfazed and played a clean round with few mistakes as he erased a six-shot deficit. The win signifies that Mickleson is focused and playing some terrific golf as the 2012 season begins to really start rolling.

As for Woods, the confidence in his golf swing is just not there, and it becomes a glaring issue when the pressure is on. Instead of thriving under it like he did in the ‘ole days, it’s almost like he’s terrified of it. His mental makeup is a shell of what it once was, and it’s the reason Mickelson shot a 64 and Woods shot a 75.

The Masters is still almost two months away and the two best players of the last decade are trending in completely opposite directions. Woods needs to stop over-thinking everything and start getting back to the basics of what made him one of the greatest golfers of all time.
