2012 NFL Draft: Most Overrated Offensive Players in Draft

Richard LangfordFeb 12, 2012

These highly touted and accomplished players are going to have a hard time making the leap from the college ranks to the NFL

They will be entering with a lot of fanfare and expectations, but their game simply doesn't translate to a level that warrants it.

Here are three players that will prove themselves to be the most overrated of this draft.

Rams Seahawks Football

Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Blackmon does not have the skills to dominate the NFL. Yet, his hype and projected draft position shows that he is expected to do just that.

Blackmon has good strength and hands and excellent ball skills. This allowed him to dominate the college ranks. But once he comes up against the bigger, stronger defenders of the NFL, he is going to struggle.

At 6'1", Blackmon is going to have a hard time going over defenders like he did in college. Especially when there is a safety helping over the top.

The other problem with this is that Blackmon doesn't have the blinding speed to beat these guys deep. Blackmon's ball skills and hands will allow him to be a good pro, but he will be a borderline No. 1 WR.

Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

Martin is going to have a long career in the NFL, but he is not a lock to be a dominant LT. He is widely considered the third-best tackle in this draft.

At 6'6" and 305 pounds, he has the size scouts crave. The problem with Martin is that he is currently better suited to be a right tackle. While this has tremendous value, it is not enough to be considered a borderline top-10 pick, like Martin.

He excels in run blocking. He gets his pads low and drives defenders off the line. He is not as skilled in pass blocking, and that comes from his struggles moving laterally. This is going to be a huge problem for Martin as he tries to deal with the speed rushers that will come at him in the NFL.

Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Jeffery has the kind of size at WR that will make your eyes pop. He is 6'4" and 229 pounds. He has shown he can physically dominate at the college level, and this has him widely considered a first-round pick.

The problem is that Jeffery might be too big...in the waist. He is carrying a few extra pounds, and this is concerning. There have been a number of physically-imposing receivers come into the NFL with big expectations over the years, only to be too slow to succeed.

This is Jeffery. He is going to have a hard time ever being a starter in this league.
